From its inception, Big Picture has been an opportunity to challenge ESCP students with a live brief, encouraging them to bring their knowledge, skills and passion to develop creative recommendations to a key strategic challenge for the L’Oréal Group.
L’Oréal is among those companies that create the future and identify opportunities where others wouldn’t.
This year’s brief was to address opportunities to bring beauty into the gaming experience in 2025. In recent years, gaming has been a cultural supernova, growing at exponential speed.
It is bigger than the music and movie industries combined, and reaches nearly 3 billion players globally, almost half of whom are women.
As ecommerce, entertainment, gaming, streaming and social continue to converge, gaming has become a great way to engage with customers and is positioned to become an important aspect of the future of social and ecommerce. The brief constituted a fantastic opportunity for ESCP students to combine their understanding of digital channels and technologies, marketing and strategy, consumer behavior and more, with their analytical and creative skills, to develop breakthrough solutions on behalf of L’Oréal.

Outgoing Chief Digital Officer, Lubomira Rochet kicked off the 2021 edition by framing the brief, “Gaming, live-streaming, augmented reality and digital services are going to transform the online shopping experience into something totally new, much more engaging, interactive, fun and paced in between a TV show, a live music festival and a video game”.
60 students (representing ca. 30 different nationalities) from the MSc Marketing and Creativity and MSc in Digital Transformation Management & Leadership helped L’Oréal imagine the future of beauty in gaming.
Big Picture is the annual crowning event of the partnership between L’Oréal and ESCP Business School. It propels students into the very heart of strategic innovation, a powerful real life learning tool for students.
Marie Taillard, L’Oréal Professor of Creativity Marketing, ESCP comments:
“Big Picture is a very special opportunity for our students to work on a creative business brief for L'Oréal. Because of COVID-19, the project was fully online for the second year running. Each team has 5 days to develop a recommendation and to develop a video and presentation to “sell” their recommendation. On the last day they present their work to a prestigious jury of L'Oréal executives. Rarely do students get to learn as much in one week as they do on this project. Year after year, they tell us that it is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that opens up new career horizons and pushes their creative and business skills to new heights.”

Marie Taillard, L’Oréal Professor of Creativity Marketing
Each team received a total of 8 to 10 coaching sessions from highly dedicated senior experts. This year, coaches included Estelle Ngo, Vincent Arcin, Julien Aubert, Meriem Abahmaoui, Quentin Habert, Chloé Perrin, Lauren Sarda Dutilh, Cyriaque Houdoux, Margot Khelifi and Marine Drion from L’Oréal; Laurent François, Lenneke Speelman and Ed Howard from 180 Amsterdam; and Professors Hsin-Hsuan Meg Lee, Kamran Razmdoost, Chi Hoang and Marie Taillard from ESCP Business School.
Among the many skills young professionals require as they enter the job market, the ability to work collaboratively to solve problems is a critical one. Big Picture offers a great opportunity for students to practice this skill. This year, students benefited from a pre-Big Picture team creativity workshop offered by our new partner agency, award-winning 180 Amsterdam, a member of the Omnicom Group.
Led by 180 Content Managing Partner, Laurent Francois and Strategic Director, Philip Jackson, the team creativity workshop compiled best practices on “How to crack a tough brief in a couple of hours”. While there’s no “one-size-fits-all” solution, the takeaways are worth noting for professionals across sectors and functions:
This year, Big Picture was co-sponsored by Vincent Arcin, Global Director of L’Oréal’s Digital Services Factory, and Estelle Ngo, Global Head of Digital Advertising. Together they presented the following brief:
H
elp us imagine the services of tomorrow!
What will be the “beauty-in-gaming” experience in 2025. What is the challenge?
Three questions to address:
Why is this vision innovative?
What value does the experience create for the consumer?
What is the business model behind it?
L’Oréal: Vincent Arcin (Global Digital Services Factory Director), Guive Balooch (Global Vice President & CTO New Business Ventures), Diane Hecquet (Media & 360 Activation Director, YSL Beauty), Stéphanie Messner (Talent Acquisition Director France), Estelle Ngo (Global Head of Digital Advertising), Fred Orsita (Director of Innovation, Tech Acceleration), Emma Shuttleworth (Talent Acquisition Director USA), Margaux Velty (Talent Acquisition Manager)
180 Amsterdam: Ed Howard (Content Director), Laurent Francois (Managing Partner, 180 Content)
ESCP Business School: Marie Taillard (L’Oréal Professor of Creativity Marketing)

The 9th of March 2020, began the italian lockdown due to the Covid crisis. Then a series of gouvernemental measures followed to limit contact between citizens.
Consequently, in the retailing sectors, companies’ transformations and the online business r(E)volution appeared. The severe lockdowns forced many brands to rethink about their strategy vis-a-vis customer engagement, the new role of physical stores and much more. How Covid has driven innovation, “forcing” companies into more digital solutions?

The 2021 Honourable Mention Delegation Award of the National Model United Nations has been awarded to students from ESCP Business School’s London Campus, representing Denmark in the global competition.
Due to the uncertainty caused by the global pandemic, this year’s National Model United Nations New York Conference 2021 was held virtually from 3rd to 7th and 10th to 14th April.
ESCP participation at this annual event has been entirely student-led, with on-campus Call On’U societies recruiting, training and selecting their final delegations each year. This year, students from the School’s top-ranked Master in Management and Bachelor in Management (BSc) programmes attended.
The winning team came from Call On’U London lead by Rania Hasnaoui Amri and Matteo Gambino. The School-wide diplomacy association of ESCP has over one hundred members and is active at five of its six campuses (Berlin, London, Paris, Madrid and Turin). During the preparation for the event and the main challenge itself, the students sharpened their negotiation and collaboration skills and showed great adaptability to the virtual setting of the conference.
NMUN, the world's largest and oldest continuous university-level Model UN annually draws participants from more than 130 UN Member States to address current global issues. Their learning programmes provide students with a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing and research. Students benefit from the formal association with the United Nations Department of Global Communications and utilise simulation procedural rules developed in the 1990s with the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). The New York conferences culminate at UN Headquarters with thousands of students in attendance.
This year, the conference hosted 22 simulated UN committees. Outside conference sessions, delegates from more than 126 UN Member States took advantage of virtual opportunities at Permanent Missions to the UN and the United Nations itself. Conference features included interactions with Secretariat members and sessions held at UN Headquarters, this year replaced by a guided virtual UN tour.
Rania Hasnaoui Amr said: “Participating in the NMUN has allowed me to broaden my view of some of the world's challenges and to get an idea of how to tackle them in a more effective and sustainable way.”
Matteo Gambino said: "Having faced many challenges in the last year, this amazing group has demonstrated that hard work and motivation always pay off. Winning an award is an achievement, but what I'm even happier about is the progress that the group has made. The whole team has done a great job, constantly improving and working on their skills simulation after simulation, week after week. Congrats everyone!”

Prof. Marion Festing’s serious game and Prof. Sylvain Bureau’s Art Thinking method have been selected as two of the ten most innovative pedagogical approaches worldwide.
Professors Marion Festing and Sylvain Bureau’s innovations have been chosen as a result of a new international competition which “aims at uncovering innovative pedagogical approaches, understanding how they are being implemented in business schools and publishing a public and global report showcasing 10 of them.” It was recently established by LearnSpace, an accelerator for EdTech start-ups launched by Svenia Busson, who also co-founded Edtech Tours and wrote Exploring Education. “We received 150+ nominations from across the globe and it wasn't easy to select the 10 most innovative out of these,” she commented.
The submissions were reviewed by an independent jury made up of business education experts and pedagogy specialists: Caryn Beck-Dudley, president and CEO of AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International) and former Dean of the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University; Andrew Jack, Global Education Editor at Financial Times; Bernard Belletante, former Dean of business schools emlyon and Kedge; Dan LeClair, CEO at Global Business School Network (GBSN).
Marion Festing was rewarded for her award-winning serious game - Moving Tomorrow: An Intercultural Journey -, which combines traditional education, current research on intercultural management and the most up-to-date pedagogical methods to teach intercultural skills; Sylvain Bureau for his Art Thinking Workshop, a three-day seminar to learn Art Thinking: an agile method using the artist’s mindset to create the improbable with certainty. “I want to take this opportunity to congratulate once more Sylvain and Marion for their innovative projects, and their significant contribution to our unique educational model,” commented Faculty Dean Valérie Moatti. “As a reminder, both Sylvain and Marion received the innovation award set up by our European Faculty Evaluation Committee (EFAC) a few years ago.”
