Forbes Italy Top 100 Under 30 2021 ranked an ESCP Master in Management student as one of the young leaders doing great things in the Venture Capital sector: Riccardo Angioli
He is the youngest talent in his category, nominated when he hadn't yet celebrated his 23rd birthday.

In 2019, Riccardo co-founded, with Roberto Sfoglietta, Starting Finance Deal, a company that connects start-ups looking for funds, with investors
The same year he started studying at ESCP Business School. After the pre-master year at the Turin Campus, he attended the Digital Project Management specialisation in Madrid. In September, he will move to the Paris Campus for the Option E specialisation.
Riccardo’s entrepreneurial success proves that you're never too young to make a difference, and it is never too early to follow your dreams of starting your own business.

We chatted with him to find out more about this significant accomplishment, his start-ups and future projects.

First of all, congratulations for making it into Forbes Italy's Top 100 under 30. It is an outstanding achievement. What was the first thing that went through your mind when you heard that you were on this influential list?

When I received the news, it was completely unexpected. When I was told, only two weeks before it was published, that I would be featured in the magazine I thought it was a joke, but after I received the pictures of the previews, what had been a dream for me actually become a reality. Ever since I started working it was a dream of mine to make it into Forbes even if it was at 29. I never thought I could reach this in the short-term. In particular, what’s really special to me is the fact that I made it in the Venture Capital section at 22, which is something that made me feel that all the sacrifices that I have made in the past few years have been worth it. I have always worked out of a pure passion for this industry and the thing I care about most is that my achievement could boost the company’s position in this sector and increase the credibility and trust of our investors and customers.

Riccardo Angioli and Roberto Sfoglietta

In 2019, at only 20 and in less than one year, you co-founded three start-ups and started your Master in Management at ESCP. What motivated you to embrace so many challenges all at the same time?

Certainly embracing so many projects was a big risk. In fact, before these ultimate successes I failed many times, for example when I tried to establish my first start-up at 17 in Napa Valley. Despite major set-backs I faced during my first year in Venture Capital I always had a strong desire to create something of my own. My passion drove me to the point of setting aside everything that didn’t involve my studies or commitment to work. Setting out on this path at such an early stage in my life took up all of my free time given that I was also studying. It's a matter of passion, ambition, prioritisation, and circumstances.

You made it into the Forbes Italy's annual "100 Under 30" list as co-founder of Starting Finance Deal, an investment and consultancy company for start-ups. What led you to the creation and success of this firm?

I realised that in Italy, there is a lack of capital for early-stage companies. Therefore, I decided to establish Starting Finance Deal. I am thrilled that after starting out with only 4, the group now counts 39 people, with a Club of more than 150 Angel Investors, and more than 6 Million € invested in the last 12 months. Today we are divided into the following departments: Sales, Analysis, Marketing, Graphics, Deal Flow, and Administration. Our growth has not been linear. Despite our success, we have had our fair share of ups and downs. The trust of the first customers and investors allowed us to believe in what we were doing. Our success is determined by the excellent team; I think we have done a fantastic job at choosing the right people and motivating them during the worst moments, as we did during the first two months of the pandemic. Also, I believe that the other three co-founders and I have achieved an excellent ability to minimise errors and always find a solution to the problems we encounter.

Only a few months later, you co-founded TAC. What prompted you to open another start-up while Starting Finance Deal was growing rapidly?
Actually, the idea for TAC formed in April 2019, before the one for Starting Finance Deal. However, it did require a deeper study and more time to set it up it in the way we envisioned. When we founded Starting Finance Deal I never thought that it would become a bigger business than TAC. Anyhow, you can tell that things went differently. While TAC required more time before entering the market because of the software development, Starting Finance Deal began to produce revenue immediately, and it never stopped growing. We are establishing two incubators (one in Rome and one in Perugia) and working on launching an investment vehicle that goes beyond the angels club.
On the other hand, TAC was launched on the market for B2C customers only two months ago, after one and a half years of development, and it will enter the B2B market next month.

In what way did what you learn at ESCP help you to achieve your goals?

ESCP is among the most prestigious universities in Europe. The opportunity to choose among various specialisations and to study in a different city every semester is something most universities can’t offer. ESCP programmes broaden your horizons and force you to think outside the box, which is very useful to students that have never left their hometown before. In particular, I am happy about the focus of ESCP on soft skills. These are what helped me the most in my working career. Prioritisation, in particular, is something that I have unfortunately learned very recently. Since then, managing my work and my entire life has been more comfortable and less stressful.

Riccardo Angioli

What advice would you give to a young talent interested in becoming a Venture Capitalist?

For those who are interested in becoming Venture Capitalists, I suggest prioritising short and medium term goals and deciding what they are aiming to achieve first. Conquering space and credibility in this sector is challenging and requires more effort than one may imagine in the beginning. Therefore, it is necessary to move forward with consciousness, determination, and courage, especially if you are young and dealing with people who have decades of experience behind them.

What are the main challenges that you foresee for your generation?

The main challenge my generation faces today is the lack of credibility young people tend to receive when they have ambitious plans. This is why I strongly believe that the gap between our generation and the previous ones should be bridged. This is what we aim to do at Starting Finance Deal, at least in the Venture Capital sector. We started our business with only 2.500€ each. It is very rare to be able to start a company with such a small amount of money as most require a large amount of equity capital which is hard to achieve for young people today. I expect more collaboration between the different generations to achieve a general harmony which is lacking today.

What's next for you?

I will be completing my Master in Management at ESCP in 2022, and after that, I expect to continue my entrepreneurial career by creating new start-ups, which is my passion. I aim to generate businesses that are more and more efficient, but with less frenzy and one at a time to have more time for myself.

In this interview, Sebastian Daus, alumnus of the Executive Master in Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurial Leadership programme (EMDIEL) (class of 2020), speaks about his entrepreneurial adventure at ESCP Business School.

COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BACKGROUND? WHERE ARE YOU FROM, WHAT DID YOU STUDY AND WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU STARTED THE EMDIEL AT ESCP BUSINESS SCHOOL?

I live and work in Berlin, but grew up in a small German village. Before EMDIEL, I was working as a freelance digital consultant and already working on a couple of my own startup ideas. My study background is industrial engineering and technology management which was very much focused on improving larger systems incrementally and very strict technical development processes e.g. in the automotive industry. There I had the opportunity to do a lot of internships from process & lean management to digital transformation and venture development in startups.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO JOIN THE EMDIEL PROGRAMME?

I was always fascinated by how an idea that could solve a specific problem can evolve into a major company with real impact. Looking back, I realised I was always involved in a small part of that process and was missing out on the full entrepreneurial process: from validating an idea, to scaling a company and consequently evolving as a leader. The programme takes you through exactly those stages that are helpful for entrepreneurs and goes above and beyond, by including different angles such as corporate innovation and introducing you to entrepreneurial ecosystems in Silicon Valley, China and major Europe. A factor that also makes this programme unique is that you can focus on your own entrepreneurial project while studying or working full-time. Combining that with the European footprint and international network provided by the top ranked ESCP Business School, it wasn’t hard for me to choose.

COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT THE MOST DIFFICULT CHALLENGE THAT YOU FACED DURING THE PROGRAMME? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME IT?

The programme constantly takes you out of your comfort zone - talking to people in Shanghai as part of a design challenge and presenting the results to a local CEO in five days or pitching your idea to larger crowds while a TED speaker coach constantly challenges you, are some that come to mind and were challenging for me personally. I believe it’s a better approach to seek out challenges like that rather than stay in your comfort zone - otherwise you’re probably not training your “growth muscles” enough… and growth is the only constant that matters, personally and in terms of startup traction.

COULD YOU SHARE WITH US A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE DURING YOUR EMDIEL THAT HAD A SIGNIFICANT AND LASTING IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE, PROFESSIONAL OR PERSONAL?

Two things come to mind: First, telling someone about an idea that you're working on is cool and probably most of your friends will clap their hands... but pitching it in front of a VC in San Francisco who is also a Stanford professor that coaches entrepreneurs around the world and tears apart every single one of your assumptions is definitely something very refreshing and memorable. This helped me improve my idea and seek out better feedback. Funnily, he is now an advisor to my startup. And second, seeing all the different entrepreneurial ecosystems helped me reflect on what I value here in Europe and demystified most of the buzz around Silicon Valley.

WHAT WERE THE MAIN HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROGRAMME FOR YOU AS AN EMDIEL PARTICIPANT?

Listening to founder stories and asking questions first hand in all different startup ecosystems and from ESCP Alumni were always highlights for me. Additionally, there are a couple of memorable moments like writing a few lines of code in Python that we learned from Oxford PhDs, the waitress in Shanghai using the voice translation in WeChat from Chinese to English that worked amazingly well in real-time, our very own first vernissage or the leadership training in virtual reality.

DID THE EMDIEL PROGRAMME HELP YOU TO IMPROVE YOUR PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS? IF YES, HOW?

Absolutely! The programme definitely helped me gain the skills, mindset and network that helped me evolve my idea into an actual venture funded startup with a small team and first clients. Personally, it also helped me enjoy and reflect on my entrepreneurial journey and learn more about myself.

WHAT KNOWLEDGE GAINED THROUGH THE EMDIEL PROGRAMME DO YOU APPLY IN YOUR CAREER OR DAILY LIFE?

The programme builds on fundamental blocks like idea validation, hiring people, branding, sales, fundraising, product development and technology trends (and more) but focuses on the practical applications not only in the classrooms but also when it comes to your entrepreneurial project. This is great - instead of only studying something on paper, it actually helps you to apply it in practice. Personally, all topics around the leadership component and storytelling modules helped me inspire people, win startup pitch events and convince clients & investors.

WHO DO YOU THINK SHOULD APPLY TO THIS PROGRAMME AND WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ADVICE TO FUTURE APPLICANTS?

I think this programme is ideal for anyone who wants to start an entrepreneurial journey, help others or enable an organization from within either directly as a part of it or indirectly, e.g. as an external consultant. I believe participants should take this as a really unique opportunity and bring a lot of their own ideas they want to take action on. It doesn’t matter if you’re an executive in a corporation, a freelance marketer, an employee in a startup or an investment professional - as long as you bring curiosity and a hands-on mindset.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE EMDIEL IN ONE SENTENCE?

An entrepreneurial adventure.

Thesis Defence
The Influence of Networks on Perceived Career Outcomes

Abstract

The present dissertation addresses the role of networks and their impacts on career outcomes. More specifically, it argues that specific network structures and dynamics trigger work opportunities and career advancement.

Organised around three individual but complementary research articles, this dissertation explores the occupancy of certain networks positions assumed to be suitable for career advancement, which are of particular interest to professional service firms.

Several researchers have established the significance of networks in organisations for motivation, promotions, and career success. Networking behaviour is the key to having access to unique resources. Specifically, recent research proposes that a specific position, such as a brokerage position, in the organisational context delivers many benefits.

Although network positions have been intensely studied, the literature still lacks a thorough understanding of the interaction between structural positions, psychological factors, how the network’s structure is perceived by actors, and motivation to act upon the opportunities offered by the structure, which may explicate certain dissimilarities over time in brokerage activities.

In contrast to previous explanations, this thesis argues that the outcomes of the relations between these variables can be seen from a different perspective.

In addition to the value created by the extant literature, this thesis seeks to explain how individuals construe and interpret their networks during their careers with a focus on gender issues.

Prof. Michael Haenlein and his co-authors won this year's Jan-Benedict Steenkamp Award for Long-Term Impact.

Professor Michael Haenlein added a new prize to his growing list of achievements: He received the prestigious 2021 Jan-Benedict E.M. Steenkamp Award for Long-Term Impact from the International Journal of Research in Marketing (IJRM) and the European Marketing Academy (EMAC), which recognizes “exceptional contributions in academic marketing research , published in IJRM, that have demonstrated long-term impact”, for his work with Werner Reinartz and Jörg Henseler on structural equation modeling published in 2009.

Here is the statement from the Award Committee, which speaks for itself:

During the past two decades, there has been a renewed interest among researchers to use partial least squares analysis (PLS). However, prior research has not evaluated the relative performance of covariance- based structural equation modeling (CBSEM) and PLS approaches per a set of key characteristics such as sample size, number of indicators per construct, distributional assumptions etc. An interesting and important question is whether we can arrive at a set of rules that researchers may use in their choice of CBSEM versus PLS.
The paper by Reinartz, Haenlein, and Henseler explores this issue and examines whether each of the approaches converge to a proper solution, the degree of parameter accuracy between the approaches, the relative importance of the different design factors on parameter accuracy, statistical power etc. The authors conduct a set of Monte Carlo simulations based on 240 scenarios defined by a full factorial design of four design factors. The results suggest that the statistical power of PLS is always larger than or equal to that of maximum likelihood-based CBSEM. Further, their simulations show that PLS can be a very good methodological choice if sample size is low. Finally, their results indicate that CBSEM is actually extremely robust to violations of its underlying distributional assumptions.

This paper led by a clear margin by receiving the most votes of the IJRM Editorial Board and was approved unanimously by the award committee. In addition, the evidence of its impact is highlighted by 1039 Web of Science and 2320 Google Scholar citations, which makes it the best cited paper among all the initial round award nominees and shows its consistent use by scholars to decide which method to use.

The latest two events were focused on “Edtech” and “Sustainability”. connect me. also hosted a wine pitch competition, where ESCP students signed up and competed in teams to pitch their prized wine bottles.

Recently, the connect me. team noticed that they were receiving a lot of questions surrounding the process of interviews (for both internships and full-time opportunities) from ESCP students

Recognising this common concern, connect me. decided to gather insights from alumni and professionals to create a comprehensive guide for all ESCP students.

“We realised finding information on and preparing for interviews is a great point of stress for students and young professionals,”says Markus Ferres, ESCP international business student and member of connect me.

Every business student would like to know the magic formula to easily tackle any interview process they undertake and land their dream jobs.

However, while there is no single proven method to achieve this, there are multiple tactics students can employ to improve their chances significantly.

“There are so many tips out there, but no single source of information gives you everything you need to know,” explains Markus. “We fix exactly this issue.”

If you are interested in finding out how to crush your next interview, download connect me.’s full guide and gain access to their extensive library of preparation material.
