Lara Bertola, PhD candidate in the Paris Doctoral programme, publicly defendes his PhD thesis in Management Sciences.
11 June 2021
Online
Organised around three individual but complementary research articles, this dissertation explores the occupancy of certain networks positions assumed to be suitable for career advancement, which are of particular interest to professional service firms.
Several researchers have established the significance of networks in organisations for motivation, promotions, and career success. Networking behaviour is the key to having access to unique resources. Specifically, recent research proposes that a specific position, such as a brokerage position, in the organisational context delivers many benefits.
Although network positions have been intensely studied, the literature still lacks a thorough understanding of the interaction between structural positions, psychological factors, how the network’s structure is perceived by actors, and motivation to act upon the opportunities offered by the structure, which may explicate certain dissimilarities over time in brokerage activities.
In contrast to previous explanations, this thesis argues that the outcomes of the relations between these variables can be seen from a different perspective.
In addition to the value created by the extant literature, this thesis seeks to explain how individuals construe and interpret their networks during their careers with a focus on gender issues.

A selection panel chaired by Mr Philippe Houzé, Chairman of the Board of ESCP, proposed his name to the London Board of Trustees. Therefore, Prof. Razmdoost is joining ESCP's EXCOM and reporting to the Management Board. Professor Razmdoost succeeds Professor Simon Mercado who moves into a new role at ESCP Business School as Executive Vice-President for Business Relations and External Affairs.
“The London Campus is very attractive to students and its development in recent years is enabling the School to tackle Brexit in the best conditions. The European Board of ESCP is confident that Prof. Kamran Razmdoost will keep strengthening our pan-European school in the UK,” says Professor Frank Bournois, Executive President and Dean of ESCP.
With six campuses across Europe in Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris, Turin and Warsaw, ESCP is the only truly pan-European business school. Each campus is recognised and accredited in its own country by national and/or local authorities.
Prof. Kamran Razmdoost joined ESCP Business School in 2017 as an Associate Professor of Marketing. He acted as the Academic Director of the MSc in Marketing & Creativity (ranked 5th worldwide by QS) from 2018 to 2020. Prior to joining ESCP, Kamran was a Lecturer and Researcher (Assistant Professor) at University College London, where he was the Deputy Director of MSc in Strategic Management of Projects and engaged with a range of business and management teaching, research and consulting activities in the context of built environment.
Kamran holds a PhD in Marketing from Cranfield School of Management. He completed his MSc in Strategic Marketing at Cranfield School of Management, MBA at Sharif University of Technology, and BSc in Mechanical Engineering at KNT University of Technology.
Kamran’s research is broadly focused on the emergence of service ecosystems through institutional change. Conceptually, he looks at the dynamics of boundaries in such emergence, and empirically has been investigating business relationships—more recently with a focus on social enterprise-corporate relationships. Kamran has a strong network of collaborators across the UK and globally. He has taught consumer value, brand activism and strategic marketing on a number of postgraduate and executive development programmes.
Prior to his academic career, Kamran acted as project risk manager, contract negotiator, management system auditor, project manager, department head, and health and safety engineer, mainly in the Oil, Gas and Petrochemical sector.
Lord Gold, the Chairman of ESCP London Campus says: “I am delighted to welcome Kamran as our new London Campus Dean. He brings with him considerable talent and flair, and I have no doubt will build on the successes of his predecessor, Prof. Simon Mercado, whose time as Dean has seen great achievements. On behalf of the Board of Trustees I wish Kamran much success in his new role and look forward to working closely with him.”
"I am delighted and honoured to have been appointed as Dean of the ESCP Business School London Campus. The campus has achieved greatly under the leadership of the previous Dean, Prof. Simon Mercado, and has developed a strong foundation for its next phase of development. ESCP has talented and committed people with deeply rooted values and culture; and the London School and Campus has a reputation which will help us to further embed ESCP within the UK academic and business ecosystem. I expect us to have a significant impact on business, society and policy,” adds Professor Kamran Razmdoost.

ESCP, the world's first business school (est. 1819), is the only business school to give their students access to 5 campuses (Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris and Turin), as part of their multi-campus education experience. The school has chosen to teach responsible leadership based on European multiculturalism. The five campuses are the stepping stones that allow students to experience this European approach to management. All while enjoying the best that these important cities in the EU have to offer.
The BSc is the most international programme of the school, with a 30% French intake and a mixture of 60 nationalities. The students spend three years in three different countries. The course has five mindsets: 1. ESG (governance criteria) 2. Digital (AI) 3. Entrepreneurship (DNA), 4. Multiculturalism (Inter-campus mobility) 5. Cross-field skills.
The Bachelor in Management (BSc) allows students to become experts in management science and learn how to make complex decisions. While exploring humanities, they practice how to deal with people and lead teams. Students gain valuable hands-on business management experience with a focus on working as a team and cross-cultural communication through internships and social impact projects. The active learning pedagogy and multinational teamwork, together successfully prepare students for truly international careers.
“The Management Board team is glad to welcome Professor Strauss- Kahn into this important mission, Strauss- Kahn's international experience and track record in teaching will help us to advance the BSc post pandemic.
“Professor Strauss- Kahn teaches microeconomics, managerial economics and several topics related to international trade, globalization and regulation to Bachelor students but also to Masters and Executive MBA participants, making her the perfect candidate to take on this role”.
“As a professor, I particularly enjoy teaching in the Bachelor. The creativity, multiculturalism and motivation of the students makes it an enriching experience for all. The BSc at ESCP is a unique experience for our students. I am taking the responsibility of Associate Dean for this programme with great pleasure and aim at enhancing its development and international visibility, while preserving its excellence and originality.”
Vanessa Strauss- Kahn has been a professor of economics at ESCP Business School since 2008. She received a Ph.D. in Economics from New York University and has been a faculty member at INSEAD from 2001 to 2008. Prof. Strauss-Kahn teaches microeconomics and international trade to Bachelor and executive MBA students. Prof. Strauss-Kahn worked for the World Bank, the United Nations, as well as the Inter-American Development Bank on specific missions. She does research on economic geography and international trade, focusing on export diversification, developing countries’ exports survival, the impact of an increase in imported intermediate goods on firm’s productivity, quality upgrading, export scope and on countries’ labour market.

Every time we send an email, use the Internet or social media, a small amount of carbon is emitted.
In the last two decades, digitalisation has had a positive impact on the environment, but the Internet does not come out of anything, and even the adoption of digital has its price.
Each single small digital action is energy-hungry and comes with a carbon footprint that we don't see, but that indeed we shouldn't ignore anymore.
Now it is time to think about how companies can reduce their digital carbon footprint!
Challenge yourself, test your skills, invent and design an innovative sustainable idea to minimise the environmental impact of companies' digital activities.
We have chosen to challenge ESCP students with a new exciting hackathon focused on an increasingly concerning topic for many companies: the Digital Carbon Footprint.
Your opinions and ideas about this issue are significant to us, and we would like to understand how to make them achievable in the business world.
What steps would you suggest companies take to reduce their digital carbon footprint?
Get ready to:

Special thanks to our technical partners Plesh and IAB Italia.
Boost your visibility through a high exposure within the recruiters and mentors of the attending companies: before, during and after the challenge!
The winning team will be invited to have an exclusive lunch with a VIP from Davines and experience the innovative and sustainable site of the company and participate at the ZED- Zero Emission Digital conference, part of the IAB Forum 2021, to present the ESCP Green Hackathon winning project.
