Erik Strauß is a Professor of Management at ESCP Berlin Campus. Since 2019, he has also served as a Visiting Professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He completed his PhD at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, focusing on "The Emergence of Management Control Systems" in 2011. He was professor in accounting and control at Witten/Herdecke University from 2014 to 2025. Prior to his academic roles in Germany, he was a Visiting Researcher at IESE Business School in Spain.
Erik’s interdisciplinary research spans the fields of management accounting, digital transformation, Artificial Intelligence, and organizational behaviour. He is particularly interested in the role of digital technologies such as AI in reshaping management control systems and organizational practices. His recent research explores topics such as the paradox of digital management control systems and the impact of performance shocks on organizational decision-making. His work has been published in leading journals, including Contemporary Accounting Research, Management Accounting Research, and European Accounting Review. In addition to his academic work, he actively contributes to the academic community. He serves on the editorial board Qualitative Research in Accounting and Management, is a reviewer for journals such as Management Accounting Research, European Accounting Review, or Organization Science, and serves as faculty member of the doctoral colloquium of the European Network for Research in Organisational and Accounting Change.
He is a frequent keynote speaker at international conferences and industry events, addressing topics such as the future of management accountants in the digital age and the evolving role of controllers in organizations.
