On 11 December, the 7 best Option-E teams from Berlin, Madrid and Paris competed with each other and pitched their business ideas during the European Demo Day Final.

The jury honoured the best projects in two categories: Best Pitch and Investment Readiness. Option-E is the specialization in Entrepreneurship of ESCP Business School’s Master in Management.

An Option-E Demo Day in two stages

On Demo Days, students present and pitch the business ideas that they developed during the semester. This year, we made it extra European. In the campus selection round, all 23 Option-E teams from ESCP Business School in Berlin, Madrid and Paris pitched in front of their campus peers and jury members. The best teams from each ESCP campus (2 from Berlin, 2 from Madrid and 3 from Paris) entered the European Demo Day Final, where they had to present for the second time.

These 7 teams were Econdo (Berlin), eQUIP (Madrid), GREENbox (Madrid), Hi!Tech (Berlin), KeepUp (Paris), Kubili (Paris) and Park My Bike (Paris). First, Econdo strengthens local communities by connecting people with local businesses. eQUIP is a rental platform for high-quality appliances. GREENbox is a returnable and reusable packaging service for online fashion retailers. Hi!Tech helps seniors master technology through an offline-to-online learning programme. KeepUp is a daily podcast that summarises news in 3 minutes. Kubili is a game that generates quality family moments. Lastly, Park My Bike is an app that makes it easy to secure your bike.

Meet the winners

Option-E: The best projects of 2020

The jury was made up of our affiliate professors Julie Guth and Peter Borchers, as well as the professionals Rodolfo Carpintier, Mehdi Ben Kahla, Laura Morillo and Silverio Rosa. After the pitches, jury members asked questions and shared feedback. Afterwards, the jury voted for the best teams in the categories Best Pitch and Investment Readiness. They could invest virtual €100,000 into the most promising start-up ideas.

Finally, GREENBox from Madrid campus won in the category Best Pitch. Congratulations to Andrea Castellana, Clément Courtier, Dennis Nesemeier, Marie-Sophie Rasch and Karim Sadqi! Secondly, in Investment Readiness, Park My Bike came out first. Well done Aliénor Fender, Zoé Barbet, Alexandre Nguyen, Augustin and Corentin Garet! Both teams won a travel voucher to an ESCP location of their choice for 2021.

Celebrating European Option-E successes

After 100 days on the Option-E journey and with more than 100 participants at the Demo Day, students, teachers and facilitators were happy and proud of what they achieved. “The event was a great success, we are looking forward to further cross-campus collaboration!”, said Agnieszka Wosek, Blue Factory and EXIST project manager in Berlin. What started as an attempt to thrive during uncertain times might be the path for creating truly European entrepreneurship projects in 2021 and beyond.

The BNP Paribas-sponsored chair awarded its best master thesis prize to Eymeric Guinet for his study of “liberated companies”, as formalized and popularized by ESCP Business School professor Isaac Getz.

The Reinventing Work chair awarded its first ever Master in Management (MiM) Theses Prize to Eymeric Guinet. “This thesis puts into perspective the importance of the vision within companies, and shows that profit – which is still a key objective – should be a consequence, not the key motivator. This leads to a human-centric approach which is aligned with the chair’s perspective”, commented the chair’s scientific director, professor Emmanuelle Léon. “In order to support his theoretical observations and to confront them with empirical reality, the student opted for a coherent and well-justified research design.”

The objective of the laureate's dissertation (in French) written under the direction of professor Gilles Arnaud, was to better understand the combination of the liberated company’s principles. “It focuses on the trade-off probabilities between the objective of ‘liberation’ and the promises of profit and performance. Incompatibility areas between these three notions emerged by using Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot’s theoretical framework,” Eymeric Guinet explains. The qualitative method used involves interviewing eleven “liberating leaders” and four “theoretical experts” on the topic - comprising Prof. Getz, who has been instrumental for the corporate liberation movement involving hundreds of companies (including Michelin, pictured) and institutions. “According to the interview analysis, the leaders seem to have given up the objective of profit maximization,” adds Eymeric Guinet. “The faith in the proper application of specific liberated company principles is supposed to provide all the necessary performance for the proper running of the organization…”

The MiM graduate also wrote an article on his research (in French) for The Conversation with ESCP doctoral student Emilie Poli, who had helped him out. He is the co-founder of Each One (ex Wintegreat), a start-up specialized in the vocational integration of refugees, and was auditioned by the Labour and Employment section of the Conseil économique social et environnemental (Economic, Social and Environmental Council) in the context of the “future of work” referral.

The Reinventing Work Research Chair celebrates its one year!

In partnership with ESCP Business School, its objective is to study the changes in today's work in order to anticipate and understand tomorrow's work. Signed a year ago, this Research Chair brings together different business lines of the BNP Paribas Group, which have chosen research themes that make sense in view of their transformation challenges.

One year later, seven research projects are in the pipe!

Monday 14 December, the first results, gathering the outputs of the various countries in which BNP Paribas operates have been presented and Eymeric Guinet, MiM Student, has been awarded the Master thesis prize of the Chair this year for his work on corporate liberation.

Reinventing work chair

"Seven research projects have already been launched, exploring, in particular, the impact of flexibility, digital technology, and hybrid operation on the behaviour of managers and their teams. ‘The goal is to offer our employees the same quality of digitalisation as we have implemented for our clients" says Sofia Merlo, Head of Group Human Resources, BNP Paribas.

"Change is accelerating. 2020… What a year! With this Research Chair, we are creating the best conditions for our teams to adapt and evolve." Vincent Lecomte, CEO, BNP Paribas Wealth Management

"We benefit from high-level research to help us transform our company and think about the consequences of this transformation. It’s not only about the run, it’s also about the future."  says Frédéric Thoral, Human Resources Director BNP Paribas Personal Finance.

"This past year, we have worked on our culture, and how its evolution impacts our managing principles. We have digitalized most of our learning content, to make it reachable ATAWAD: anytime, anywhere, and from any device." explains Claire Maldera, Head of Human Resources, BNP Paribas Wealth Management.

"This chair questions the notion of flexibility regarding time, space, and tasks. The strong engagement of both parties, BNP Paribas business lines and ESCP research teams makes it an amazing place to pursue research projects", underlines Professor Emmanuelle Leon, Scientific Director of the Reinventing Work Chair.

24 June 2020 | Relevant COVID-19 and public health updates for incoming students starting on Berlin Campus in autumn 2020

ESCP Berlin Campus is monitoring the latest public health developments, advice, and recommendations regarding COVID-19 in Germany. At the moment, we would like to reassure students that the ESCP Berlin team is striving to provide the best experience for the upcoming term starting in September 2020 while taking into account the health and safety of the ESCP community. We have taken the current situation to rethink and to develop further our teaching practices, and to come up with a set of pedagogical innovations to guarantee the highest quality for every likely study scenario this autumn.

Due to the public health situation in Germany, all classes and programmes are currently being held online. In autumn we will most likely pursue a hybrid approach with classes taking place on campus as well as online, adapted to the respective courses and programme objectives. ESCP Berlin Campus will also provide spaces on campus to be used for networking and socialising in compliance with the hygienic and safety regulations of the Berlin Senate. We are committed to acting swiftly to any developments, and keeping the community updated on how studies will be organised in the upcoming semesters.

As a result of its commitment to sustainability, ESCP reached fourth place in a ranking of European business schools for their SDG-related research.

Compiled by the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM), the ranking of European business schools’ research papers related to the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and published in the FT50 list of leading academic journals was made public by the Financial Times.

The ESCP faculty’s achievement is a result of Associate Dean for Research Pramuan Bunkanwanicha’s BEST strategy, which has seen research activities continuously include more sustainability: the number of publications on the matter surged to 22% in 2018, and their impact is now measured by their societal influence.

This highlights the fact that the school has understood that faculty members, students and potential employers are seeking greater emphasis on social purpose in academic research. But it also rewards ESCP’s efforts towards a more sustainable approach, made for several years on many of its fields of action: research, of course, but also teaching with more and more dedicated courses, processes and governance etc. “We are very proud of these results, which materialize the global sustainability transformation in which ESCP has been engaged for several years now. This ranking shows the commitment of our faculty on SDGs, which is at the cornerstone of other transformations in our curricula and processes,” comments the school’s Associate Dean for Sustainability, Aurélien Acquier, for whom ESCP, as a business school, has a key role to play through its educational innovations backed up by the ESCP-Deloitte Circular Economy chair.
