Everyone is involved: A workshop on inclusive teamwork
SEMI at ESCP Berlin campus

With offices in Berlin and Brussels, SEMI is a global industry association across semiconductor and electronics design, connecting over 3,000 member companies and 1.5 million professionals worldwide.

As a fellow member of the European Chips Diversity Alliance, ESCP Business School welcomed SEMI Europe to its Berlin campus for a two-day customized workshop. In line with the theme "Making inclusive teamwork everyone's work", the workshop's principal focus was on the challenges of effective teamwork with a diverse workforce / remote work, and how to ensure psychological safety and belonging amongst employees.

Designed and taught together by Kerstin Alfes & Stephan Schmuck, over two days, participants engaged in lively discussions and reflections on team values, communication, learning and un-learning both on an individual and team-level.

Starting from building on insights on bias and their consequences on individual and organizational behavior, the workshop emphasized the importance of delayed intuition and building habits of second-thought accountability in creating a workplace that is both equitable and psychologically safe.

Finally, framed around the idea of belonging as key to well-being and effective cooperation in remote teams, participants carved out their team’s visible and invisible guidelines during our interactive sessions.

Some key learnings from the workshop included the continuing importance of dialogue and clear communication in working towards a shared goal, learning about diversity – neurodiversity, biases, intersectionality, belonging – and implementing strategies that address subsequent challenges in the workplace.
