ESCP MDT Students Visit Comau in Turin: Exploring the Human & Technology Journey

From 28–30 May 2025, students from the MSc in Digital Transformation Management & Leadership (MDT) at ESCP Business School took part in a three-day international study trip to Comau, a global leader in industrial automation.

Held at Comau’s headquarters in Turin, the visit explored the evolving relationship between human capabilities and technological innovation - a key theme in digital transformation and the MDT programme.

This study trip, part of the credited Automation & Robotics module, adds an additional dimension to the programme's unique international structure, where students spend six months in London and three months in Paris.

Our goal is to offer students truly hands-on experiences. In the Robotics & Automation module, co-designed with Comau, they’re not just sitting in a classroom, they’re actively coding and programming real robots. This kind of practical engagement is essential to developing the digital leadership skills the industry needs today.

This long-standing collaboration, now in its fifth year, reflects the programme’s dedication to working alongside industry leaders like Comau to deliver knowledge that is both innovative and highly relevant.

Human-Machine Collaboration in Practice

The experience began with a welcome from Stefano Pesce, Head of EMEA Business Development and Academy at Comau, who introduced the company’s innovation strategy and human-machine collaboration approach. Students then explored Comau’s innovation showroom before joining an expert-led session on Exoskeleton technology, with a focus on the MATE Exoskeleton—a wearable device that enhances physical performance in industrial settings. During the session, students explored its real-world business applications and had the opportunity to also test the device firsthand.

It was a pleasure hosting the ESCP MDT students at Comau. We believe these engagements are crucial for fostering collaboration between academia and industry, allowing us to connect with bright, emerging talent, share our expertise, and gain fresh perspectives on industry challenges. The MDT students were incredibly engaged and insightful, making the experience truly rewarding.

Robotics, Coding, and Real-World Challenges

Students participated in two introductory sessions on robotics and Python programming, which laid the foundation for working with Comau’s e.DO Robot - the true highlight of this trip. Working both individually and in small teams, they programmed the robot to complete pick-and-place tasks, applying coding skills in a real automation setting.

The experience culminated in a Business Simulation Challenge, where students developed Python-based solutions to a live case study, testing their technical, analytical, and teamwork skills under time pressure.

The Comau workshop was one of the most engaging and hands-on experiences of our master’s. What stayed with me the most was how quickly we were able to learn and apply concepts in robotics, even though it felt completely out of reach just a few days earlier.

From programming the e.DO robot in Python to trying out the MATE exoskeleton and working on a robotics business simulation, every part of the workshop challenged us in the best way. It showed me that no topic is too complex if you're willing to ask the right questions and have the right mentors to support you. More than anything, it gave me the confidence to approach new technologies with curiosity instead of hesitation, and that’s something I know will stay with me as I move forward in my career.
