Speaker: Dr Adina Revol, Author of the "Rompre avec la Russie. Le réveil énergétique européen”, ed. Odile Jacob (Breaking with Russia: The European Energy Awakening)

Since the post-war era, energy has been central to European integration, beginning with coal, steel and nuclear power. However, Europe's dependence on Russian energy exposed critical vulnerabilities. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has prompted a rapid transformative decision to end this historical reliance, marking a significant geopolitical shift towards energy sovereignty and a unified European stance toward Russia. The path to energy sovereignty remains long, but energy is at the heart of EU autonomy: no great nation prospers without secure, stable and competitive energy.

Distinguished speaker Dr Adina Revol will discuss:

  • Russian geopolitical imperialism and a divided EU as tools for exerting energy dependence
  • The slow European energy awakening and the complexities of the Energy Union
  • The war in Ukraine and the birth of REPowerEU as a major geopolitical swift
  • The cost of energy sovereignty, and the remaining path to fully breaking free from Russian gas by 2027
  • How to avoid creating a new gas dependence on the USA or a new “green” dependence on China
  • The crucial issue of energy costs and the EU’s ability to finance the green transition

The webinar will take place on Zoom at 6pm GMT on Thursday, 6th February.
