Gone are the days when working from home was merely an option; now, it’s a radical transformation that is so widespread that it has greatly reduced the need for office space and business travel. The trajectory toward remote work gained momentum in the early 2000s with the evolution of reliable home internet. The emergence of wifi further simplified the process, making 100% remote work not just feasible but efficient. Covid 19 and its impact on the ability to move freely sealed the deal: pre-Covid, approximately 5% of the global workforce worked primarily from home. Currently 20-30% of employees are making this choice and the number is expected to grow.

Similarly more and more students are opting for fully remote work when they launch their careers, unlocking productivity while surpassing geographical constraints. In this blog post, we’ll explore the advantages and disadvantages of remote work, offering valuable insights and advice for those eager to explore this transformative career landscape.

What are the advantages of fully remote work?

In exploring the advantages of 100% remote work, numerous benefits come to mind. First and foremost, it maximizes the time dedicated to actual work, eliminating the time lost in commuting as well as in casual conversations with colleagues. Beyond time efficiency, there can be substantial cost savings, encompassing both the working environment and transportation expenses. The flexibility inherent in remote work allows individuals to tap into a broader array of professional opportunities that might otherwise be limited by geographical constraints. People no longer have to ask themselves “I really like the job opportunity but I don’t like the company’s location and I don’t want to move there. What should I do?”

This model shift in work dynamics is not just theoretical; there are tangible statistics and real-life examples showcasing the success of those who have embraced the remote work model. Zapier, an SaaS company, is a pioneer in remote work: they have been 100% remote since their founding in 2011. They showcase how teams can efficiently collaborate, serving as a proof to the viability and success of the remote work model.

What about the disadvantages of working 100% remotely?

Despite the evident advantages, the transition to 100% remote work is not without its challenges. One notable disadvantage is the potential loss of the spirit of teamwork and the dynamics that a physical work space creates. The absence of face-to-face interactions may lead to a sense of isolation among team members. Building and maintaining relationships become difficult when there’s limited opportunity to get to know one’s colleagues personally. This deficiency in real-time interaction poses challenges for effective collaboration, making it crucial for teams to find alternative means of communication. Furthermore, the shift to a remote setting underscores the importance of self-discipline and adept time management skills, as the home environment can introduce unique distractions as well.

Advice for students considering remote work

  • Take responsibility for tasks. Be goal-oriented and set clear career objectives.
  • Focus on your written communication skills: a misworded email could create more problems than it solves.
  • It’s essential to take ownership of work missions, demonstrating a proactive approach.
  • Create a dedicated work environment at home to allow a clear boundary between work and personal life. This will enhance your focus and productivity.
  • Actively make connections beyond work hours, such as scheduling virtual “happy hours” with colleagues to build relationships and foster teamwork.

Make sure to maintain a balanced work-life dynamic, emphasizing the importance of stepping outside, engaging in real-world interactions, and avoiding the traps of excessive screen time.

We asked Mansi Bansal; Manager Business Solutions, Custom Programmes & Career Development at ESCP Berlin campus what advice she would give to a student looking for a first job that is 100% remote:

“Make sure it corresponds with your career values. There are pros and cons to 100% remote work. For example: It might provide you the flexibility to work from anywhere, you can maintain a good work life balance. However, it might also lead to communication difficulties with your colleagues and limited team building. Therefore, try to understand what is more important for you. But don’t be afraid of making the wrong decision, your career development is a journey and every experience becomes part of that lifelong journey. Also, your career values might change with time and as you gain more experience.”

The exploration of 100% remote work has advantages and disadvantages, from heightened productivity to potential feelings of isolation. As students consider this transformative career landscape, it’s crucial to assess whether remote work aligns with their profiles, weighing the pros and cons in relation to personal preferences and work styles. Choosing a remote job should not solely be based on geographical convenience. Making informed decisions is critical, and students are encouraged to seek guidance if needed. Remote work, with its potential for flexibility and increased opportunities, can be an excellent option for those who thrive in a home-based work environment. Ultimately, the key lies in understanding one’s needs, capabilities, and preferences to embark on a remote work journey that aligns with individual goals and aspirations.
