From <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/choose-to-lead\/emotional-intelligence-leadership-and-gender-equality-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>emotional intelligence<\/em><\/a><em> to adapting to new ways of working, ESCP asks a host of business experts for their top tips and takeaways when it comes to expanding your soft skills.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s diverse employment market, with its focus on digital platforms, global social networks and remote working, cultural intelligence has never been more important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Defined by scholar Andrew DuBrin in his seminal work <em>Human Relationships: Interpersonal Job-Oriented Skills<\/em> as <em>\u201can awareness of and willingness to investigate the reasons why individuals of another culture act as they do\u201d, <\/em><strong>cultural intelligence<\/strong>, or CQ, is fast becoming one of employers\u2019 most highly prized soft skills. But just as intelligence in and of itself covers several key concepts, cultural intelligence includes a palette of different skills, as Professor of Human Resource Management and Intercultural Leadership <a href=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/festing-marion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marion Festing<\/a> explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-3 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis: 66.66%;\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>When we talk about cross-cultural collaboration at work, we\u2019re not exclusively talking about language or national cultural barriers &#8211; although those are certainly important. We\u2019re talking about coping with diversity as a whole, about broadening your perception, about trying your best to avoid bias.<\/p><p><cite>Marion Festing, Academic Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/faculty-research\/research-centres\/TMI-Talent-Management-Institute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Talent Management Institute and of the Excellence Centre of Intercultural Management<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-rounded\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"264\" src=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/prof-marion-festing-escp-business-school.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Marion Festing\" class=\"wp-image-8784\" sizes=\"(max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is cultural intelligence?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cognitive CQ<\/strong> includes <strong>cultural knowledge, <\/strong>which reflects one\u2019s familiarity with different cultures.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Metacognitive CQ<\/strong>, or <strong>cultural mindfulness<\/strong>, deals with our ability to stop seeing our own cultural construct as dominant when interacting with people from other cultures and to be aware of possible differences.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Motivational CQ<\/strong> covers our willingness to adjust to other cultures, e.g. different social structures and behaviours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Behavioural CQ<\/strong> reflects your concrete cross-cultural skills.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand the foundations of cultural intelligence, Festing adds: \u201cCultural knowledge and skills can emerge with exposure. For example: are you able to follow social cues in a culture that\u2019s not your own? How good are you at interpreting body language, accommodating specific gestures or verbal tics, or accepting certain cultural specificities to do with things like politeness, lateness, and certain group interactions?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The benefits of a strong cultural intelligence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Concretely, what are the benefits of managers with strong cultural intelligence? Experts say that <strong>investing in employees\u2019 CQ improves productivity, encourages diversity and helps maintain a positive brand image as a company grows. <\/strong>A belief shared by corporate giants PWC, for whom CQ and the wider challenge of diversity are inextricably linked as part of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/diversity-inclusion\/best-practices\/assets\/the-pwc-diversity-journey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Inclusion Index<\/a><strong>, <\/strong>and Ikea CEO Mikkel Ohlsson, <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2013\/09\/great-leaders-who-make-the-mix-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">who has previously spoken at length<\/a> about CQ\u2019s benefits both from a value and business point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Any business can benefit from making CQ a priority, not just multinational corporations with offices around the globe.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Festing agrees: \u201cIf you\u2019re struggling to understand other cultures, it might help to reframe the context.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we talk about cross-cultural collaboration at work, we\u2019re not exclusively talking about language or national cultural barriers &#8211; although those are certainly important. We\u2019re talking about coping with diversity as a whole, about broadening your perception, about trying your best to avoid bias.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broadly speaking, if developing your EQ helps you to relate to your peers, developing your CQ helps you to relate to people who haven\u2019t shared your lived experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to develop your cultural intelligence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s global society, how can one improve cultural intelligence without necessarily being multilingual? Well, you\u2019re probably more advanced than you think.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Festing notes: \u201cEach of us grew up somewhere, within specific social structures and experiences, so a certain amount of cultural knowledge has been developed in early childhood. CQ is more complex than just this preliminary cultural knowledge and has a lot more to do with how interested you are in interacting with people whose cultural reflexes are unlike your own. A first step, e.g. for developing <strong>motivational CQ<\/strong> is to <strong>reflect on similarities and differences you perceive<\/strong>. This creates awareness for stereotypes and biases that need to be made aware and managed in intercultural interaction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Cultural intelligence is a learnable skill just like any other.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Festing continues: \u201cIt\u2019s important to reflect on your priorities. If you\u2019re looking to develop your <strong>cognitive intelligence<\/strong>, the internet is an excellent place to start. Even if you\u2019re not able to, say, develop a deep <strong>cultural knowledge of the country<\/strong> where an upcoming meeting will take place, visiting local forums and initiating discussions on social media is a great way to pick up cultural tips to help reinforce your CQ. For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globeproject.com\/results\/countries\/CRI?menu=list#list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GLOBE website<\/a> provides research results on dominating national values for many countries as a first orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIntercultural group work, as has happened in ESCP\u2019s recent series of intercultural workshops around the serious game <a href=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/tomorrow-choices\/improving-intercultural-competencies-through-serious-games\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018Moving Tomorrow\u2019<\/a>, is a great way to put your newly acquired skills into practice. Sharing your own perspective and receiving feedback in return, from, say, a foreign colleague or client who\u2019s usually based abroad, is also excellent for addressing the motivational aspect of CQ, deeply rooted in the created mutual understanding. At the same time participants <strong>make decisions, get feedback on the appropriateness of their actions<\/strong> and <strong>learn to act in a humble and appreciative way<\/strong> in intercultural situations. Thus they also develop the <strong>behavioural dimension of CQ<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rest assured &#8211; there\u2019s no need to book a one-way ticket to Tokyo in order to give your CQ a boost! Any business can benefit from making CQ a priority, not just multinational corporations with offices around the globe. For Professor Marion Festing, the answer is clear:&nbsp;<br>\u201c<strong>Cultural intelligence is a learnable skill just like any other<\/strong>. It goes without saying that poor communicators are likely to have a lower CQ, since all of our social interactions, whether with people we\u2019ve known for years or with a complete stranger, are powered by both verbal and non-verbal communication. The message you\u2019re trying to get across doesn\u2019t just need to be clearly expressed &#8211; it needs to be couched in an appropriate social context for it to be received effectively.
