Indeed, this is sometimes a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/are-companies-that-support-pride-and-other-social-causes-wokewashing-162150\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">source of criticism<\/a>&nbsp;within the community as companies are perceived to be cashing in on LGBT causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the United States, several hundred American corporations are part of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/business-coalition-for-equality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Human Rights Campaign business coalition<\/a>&nbsp;which advocates in support of a bill in Congress that would provide legal protections to LGBT people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it is easy to forget that these demonstrations of support for LGBT customers and employees is restricted to certain countries. <mark>Corporate solidarity is rarely a privilege afforded to people living in countries where governments are hostile to the LGBT community.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"135\" src=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/ricardo-gomez-angel-przvcstqje4-unsplash-1-1024x135.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7777\" srcset=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/ricardo-gomez-angel-przvcstqje4-unsplash-1-1024x135.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/ricardo-gomez-angel-przvcstqje4-unsplash-1-300x40.jpg 300w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/ricardo-gomez-angel-przvcstqje4-unsplash-1-768x101.jpg 768w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/ricardo-gomez-angel-przvcstqje4-unsplash-1-150x20.jpg 150w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/ricardo-gomez-angel-przvcstqje4-unsplash-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ricardo Gomez Angel &#8211; Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This represents a large proportion of the world. According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ilga.org\/state-sponsored-homophobia-report-2020-global-legislation-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Lesbian and Gay Association<\/a>, <strong>69 countries currently criminalise consensual same-sex activities<\/strong>. In some countries, the penalty is death. For LGBT people in these hostile countries, including those who work at multinational corporations, coming out puts their lives in danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But <strong>multinational corporations that have a presence in hostile countries can use their economic influence and corporate resources <\/strong>to advance protections for LGBT people in the same way they champion equality in western countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Corporate social responsibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the resources corporations invest in corporate political activity, <strong>they can help advocate for LGBT rights in hostile countries as part of their social responsibility agenda.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As multinational corporations contribute to the economy in their host countries, they have access to the government officials. Access creates an opportunity for them to raise concerns regarding a country\u2019s unfriendly LGBT laws and practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-plain has-white-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Can multinational corporations really be fully engaging in social responsibility if they turn a blind eye to state-sanctioned hostilities against LGBT people, including their own employees, suppliers, and customers?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>There will be critics who argue multinational corporations should&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/lgbtq-oil-workers-face-tough-reality-abroad-antigay-laws-2020-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">respect the laws<\/a>&nbsp;of their host countries and avoid activities that could negatively impact their business interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This position needs to be challenged. Can multinational corporations really be fully engaging in social responsibility if they turn a blind eye to state-sanctioned hostilities against LGBT people, including their own employees, suppliers, and customers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supporting LGBT people in hostile countries<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although corporations may feel obliged to comply with local laws that criminalise same-sex activities, <strong>there are varying degrees of action that can be taken to protect LGBT people in hostile countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/brittani-burns-98uyq-kupie-unsplash-750x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7778\" width=\"504\" height=\"688\" srcset=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/brittani-burns-98uyq-kupie-unsplash-750x1024.jpg 750w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/brittani-burns-98uyq-kupie-unsplash-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/brittani-burns-98uyq-kupie-unsplash-768x1048.jpg 768w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/brittani-burns-98uyq-kupie-unsplash-150x205.jpg 150w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/brittani-burns-98uyq-kupie-unsplash.jpg 879w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Brittani Burns &#8211; Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>One of the approaches suggested by Coqual, a global non-profit think tank, is the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/coqual.org\/reports\/out-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cAdvocate Model\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;by which corporations directly lobby host governments or provide symbolic support for the local LGBT community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can be done either as part of ongoing engagements with lawmakers or on a one-off basis where protections for LGBT people are directly raised in business meetings. For multinational corporations that choose to directly advocate, the approach may need to be measured without being heavy-handed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the country, securing full equality for LGBT people such as recognition for same-sex marriages may not be realistic at present, but efforts to provide fundamental protections such as decriminalisation, the introduction of laws against hate crime and non-discrimination policies for LGBT people may be more attainable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>LGBT talent takes into consideration a country\u2019s laws when selecting international assignments and business travel.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Another approach to corporate LGBT advocacy is being part of a global coalition of like-minded businesses. Open For Business, a London-based non-profit, undertakes research on the economic benefits of LGBT inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/open-for-business.org\/working-globally-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent reports<\/a>&nbsp;found that <strong>LGBT talent takes into consideration a country\u2019s laws when selecting international assignments and business travel.<\/strong> Another demonstrated the negative economic impacts of hostile policies toward LGBT people in <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5bba53a8ab1a62771504d1dd\/t\/60d1b199e098bd3ca30df42b\/1624355229493\/The+Economic+Case+for+LGBT%2B+Inclusion+in+CEE+EN+July+2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Central and Eastern Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Corporations can use evidence like this to make the business case that unfriendly LGBT laws and practices could have an impact on the talent pipeline and by extension the local economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beyond the \u201cpink dollar\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A corporation that prides itself on being a good place to work for LGBT people and chases the <a href=\"https:\/\/mediasmarts.ca\/digital-media-literacy\/media-issues\/diversity-media\/queer-representation\/pink-dollar-marketing-queer-representation-advertising\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cpink dollar\u201d<\/a> but takes little action to advocate against the persecution of those very people may risk justifiable criticism about its true commitment to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There could also be reputational risks<\/strong> where multinational corporations have a significant presence in hostile countries with harsh laws while marketing themselves as LGBT-friendly businesses in western countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reasons multinational corporations are doing more to advance LGBT equality at home may be tied to the growing workplace diversity and inclusion agenda, and the plentiful&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mediasmarts.ca\/digital-media-literacy\/media-issues\/diversity-media\/queer-representation\/pink-dollar-marketing-queer-representation-advertising\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cpink dollar\u201d<\/a>.
