The sense that anything was possible? All the American films I watched and the books I read (I was too young for Dr. Seuss, though) when I was growing up. Not to mention the TV series <em>Happy Days<\/em>\u2026 Even when I studied journalism in the U.S., I could literally feel \u2013 and envy &#8211; the optimism and enthusiasm all around me: being French, I admit I\u2019m more like Groucho than Harpo (Marx).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"R.E.M. - It&#039;s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z0GFRcFm-aY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Carefree and careless<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That was before\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before 9\/11.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before the rise to prominence of neoliberal economics, which <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naomi_Klein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Naomi Klein<\/a> so craftfully explains \u2013 among other things.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before global warming, or more precisely the realisation of its scale and impact.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before platforms, the gig economy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before social media and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2019\/oct\/25\/fox-news-watching-what-i-learned\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plain bad \u2018media\u2019 like Fox News<\/a>, which have only encouraged the rise of fake news, climate sceptics, conspiracy theorists, \u2018post-truth\u2019 and business BS, contributing to the overall state of democracy (will Elon Musk really remedy that?) and even undermining the trust necessary for the proper conduct of business.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before Covid-19, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openaccessgovernment.org\/preservation-of-common-goods\/89345\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of the symptoms of the Anthropocene era<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before the latest \u2018oil (and gas) war\u2019 &#8211; in Ukraine &#8211; reminiscent of black comedy Dr. Strangelove (or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Americans have clearly become more sceptical, pessimistic even. And <strong>in the face of so much that is wrong, some of us can only long for the \u2018simpler\u2019 decades of our youth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Only 29% of U.S. adults say they have a great deal of confidence in scientists to act in the best interests of the public!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As underlined in the issues exposed in Netflix hit movie <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dontlookup-movie.com\/synopsis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Don\u2019t Look Up<\/a><\/em> &#8211; the gig economy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/tl-dr\/dont-look-up-when-technological-opiumism-leads-the-way\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018technological opiumism\u2019<\/a> and interests \u2018winning\u2019 over peer-reviewed public research \u2013 and in Richard Powers\u2019 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/wwnorton.com\/books\/9780393881141\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bewilderment<\/a> &#8211; <\/em>the reluctance of public authorities to fund independent research that could be useful to humanity -, <mark>there is simply too little public trust in scientists.<\/mark> Although <a href=\"https:\/\/wellcome.org\/news\/public-trust-scientists-rose-during-covid-19-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">it rose during the Covid-19 crisis<\/a>, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/science\/2022\/02\/15\/americans-trust-in-scientists-other-groups-declines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has now fallen below pre-pandemic levels<\/a> &#8211; only 29% of U.S. adults say they have a great deal of confidence in scientists to act in the best interests of the public!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can the (streamed) show really go on?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IPCC reports<\/a> or people like environmentalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2022\/feb\/25\/this-is-how-we-defeat-putin-and-other-petrostate-autocrats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bill McKibben<\/a> are starting to get some news coverage. The fact that the media \u2013 well, some of them anyway &#8211; are actually tackling this theme goes to show that mentalities are changing. But like other industries, they should address the problem head-on. Netflix is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/tl-dr\/lab-rats-management-misery-made-in-silicon-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the \u201csweatshops\u201d of Silicon Valley<\/a>. And I still don\u2019t know what to make of the fact that <strong>an industry-backed study shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2021\/06\/11\/netflix-streaming-small-carbon-footprint-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the carbon footprint of streaming a show is smaller than some past estimates and the production of a movie<\/a>\u2026<\/strong> This tends to make me not just sceptical but cynical, especially as the production of content represents 50% of Netflix\u2019s emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"534\" height=\"635\" src=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/carbon-impact-of-video-streaming-69.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/carbon-impact-of-video-streaming-69.jpg 534w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/carbon-impact-of-video-streaming-69-252x300.jpg 252w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/carbon-impact-of-video-streaming-69-150x178.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Source: Carbon impact of video streaming \u00a9 Carbon Trust<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I agree with Beno\u00eet Heilbrunn, who wrote a book about responsible consumption, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aXfLt2o_qAo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">when he says that <strong>sustainability has become a buzzword<\/strong><\/a> (subtitles FOC) and \u201cis very difficult to define precisely.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And what about green-washing?<\/strong> In <em>The End<\/em>, Jim Morrison sang about \u2018the end of everything that stands\u2019 as well as \u2018the end of laughter and soft lies\u2019. Hard ones, in the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renewableenergyworld.com\/solar\/how-green-is-totalenergies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TotalEnergies<\/a> (and the ties with Russia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/totalenergies-decide-russian-business-days-says-le-maire-2022-03-01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">it won\u2019t sever<\/a>)!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>You would not believe how many indigestible yet fascinating scientific articles I read every day as part of my work!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Rooted in reality, this kind of news piece based on faculty expertise is but one example of how researchers can contribute to change. ESCP\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/news\/impact-papers-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">impact paper series<\/a> is another one. <strong>It partly answers some academics\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacsb.edu\/insights\/articles\/2022\/03\/its-time-for-academics-to-write-differently\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">call for their peers to communicate in a way that will resonate with larger audiences<\/a> <\/strong>(drawing inspiration from journalism). So does this platform (The Choice), on which we try to act upon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msi.org\/working-papers\/how-do-media-report-about-academic-research-an-empirical-study-of-over-15000-marketing-articles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some of our faculty members\u2019 findings<\/a>. Other academics even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2022\/apr\/11\/the-big-idea-should-we-get-rid-of-the-scientific-paper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">want to get rid of scientific papers<\/a> altogether!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, chance and the decaying state of the news<s>paper<\/s> industry, not choice led me to become a \u2018knowledge worker\u2019 in a business school (one of the perks: I still get to play with words). My line of work should be made more interesting, vital even, simply because you would not believe how many indigestible yet fascinating scientific articles I read every day as part of my work! <strong>There should be more people with my profile helping researchers<\/strong> communicate about their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Times They Are a-Changin<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, I feel lucky to be working for a school that not only addresses the issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfocusmagazine.com\/much-ado-about-scientific-research\/\">research&#8217;s responsibility<\/a> and states that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfocusmagazine.com\/much-ado-about-scientific-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">now is the time for business schools to \u2018walk the talk of responsible management education\u2019<\/a>, but actually makes it happen elsewhere, by <a href=\"https:\/\/council.science\/current\/blog\/how-to-teach-energy-transition-and-climate-in-business-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strengthening the understanding of sustainability principles in the corporate world<\/a>. And no, I\u2019m not a content marketer or part of my company\u2019s advocacy programme. Nobody made me do this. Purpose did. And more than ever, <strong>purpose should drive academics\u2019 research. <\/strong>That requires adequate funding, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t be fooled: <strong>this is not a walk in the park<\/strong> and ESCP didn\u2019t reach fourth place in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6b499b5b-76fc-4fee-9684-f8055e52c46e?shareType=nongift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a ranking of European business schools for their SDG-related research publications<\/a> and the number one spot in <a href=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/news\/escp-changenowles-echos-start-ranking-schools-changing-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a French ranking of schools changing the world<\/a> overnight. <br><br>All is not well that ends well. Not in the foreseeable future anyway.
