Scientists know how to destroy it. What do we do? We don\u2019t even look up. We don\u2019t even react. We do as we are told by a Silicon Valley CEO &#8211; who is a mix between Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg. That is, in a few words, a simplistic version of the movie \u2013 and now worldwide phenomenon &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dontlookup-movie.com\/synopsis\/\">Don\u2019t Look Up<\/a>. <mark>Is that so different than what is happening today? Nothing is less certain. Did we already enter the realm of technological opiumism? Probably. Let\u2019s talk!<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DON&#039;T LOOK UP | Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence | Official Trailer | Netflix\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RbIxYm3mKzI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><em>Creating the next Google and saving the world are basically the same thing.\u201d \u2013 Astro Teller<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to advances in science and technology, we can improve individuals and society. That\u2019s, in a few words, what <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Technological_utopianism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">technological utopianism<\/a> is about. Meaning: <strong>thanks to new technologies, we do the good stuff like destroying a comet &#8211; and we make profit, but \u201cthat\u2019s just a bonus.\u201d<\/strong> Astro Teller, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/x.company\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">X<\/a> (formerly known as Google X), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alphabet_Inc.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alphabet<\/a>\u2019s \u201cmoonshot factory\u201d says nothing less: \u201cCreating the next Google and saving the world are basically the same thing.\u201d This mindset originates from the Bay Area in the context of the 1960s American counterculture and the advent of the information age, as shown by Silicon Valley expert Fred Turner. It gave birth to the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/09505439609526455\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Californian ideology<\/a> that \u201ccombines the freewheeling spirit of the hippies and the entrepreneurial zeal of the yuppies.\u201d The link between these two a priori antithetical movements is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyber-utopianism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital utopianism<\/a>, i.e. the profound belief that the advances in science and technology will lead to a form of utopia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>However, according to some scholars, technological progress alone would not provide spiritual and philosophical transcendence.<\/strong> The uncertain future perceived from a technological point of view would seem frightening and infinite. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seuil.com\/ouvrage\/le-temps-de-la-consolation-michael-f-ssel\/9782021183382\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">French philosopher Micha\u00ebl F\u0153ssel<\/a> points out that \u201cthe only eye on the past that can be comforting is the one that brings it back to the eventuality of future progress.\u201d Individuals look to technological advances as a continuation with the past, overcoming the disenchantment&nbsp;and need for transcendence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technological utopianism fits perfectly this need. It brings us hope in a time of despair. Like a blanket, it brings us warmth when it\u2019s cold outside. And we are grateful for that. But remember, <mark>a blanket does not provide a 400-square metre house with a swimming-pool. Even if the designer of the blanket told you so.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><em>The worldwide spread of technological utopianism has turned it to a secular form of religious belief.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReligion is the opium of the people,\u201d said Karl Marx. This has never been truer than today. The worldwide spread of technological utopianism has turned it to a secular form of religious belief. This faith in the saving power of technology anaesthetizes our responsiveness to societal and political issues, turning utopianism into <em>opiumism<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/40927986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to Leo Marx<\/a>, the concept of technology itself has been \u201cendowed with a thing-like autonomy and a seemingly magical power of historical agency. We have made it an all-purpose agent of change. <strong>As compared with other means of reaching social goals, the technological has come to seem the most feasible, practical, and economically viable.\u201d<\/strong> Technology is leading us in a progressive direction, as exemplified in the painting of John Gast (1872), \u201cAmerican Progress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"779\" src=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/american_progress-1024x779.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/american_progress-1024x779.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/american_progress-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/american_progress-768x584.jpg 768w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/american_progress-150x114.jpg 150w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/american_progress.jpg 1307w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark>These new discoveries would be likely to solve the biggest issues humanity is facing, even the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aom.org\/doi\/10.5465\/amj.2016.4007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">societal grand challenges<\/a><\/em><\/mark>, these \u201cspecific critical barrier(s) that, if removed, would help solve important societal problem with a high likelihood of global impact through widespread implementation.\u201d Diverse institutions have formulated their societal grand challenges, like the United Nations with their 17 <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> (SDGs). Examples of these challenges are \u201cno poverty,\u201d \u201czero hunger,\u201d \u201cgood health and well-being\u201d but also \u201csustainable cities and communities\u201d or \u201cclimate action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many technological utopian actors like the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Singularity_University\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Singularity University<\/a> have seized these global challenges as a way to promote technological solutions. Technology is perceived as the solution addressing these major challenges, bringing about an improved, ideal society. Clearly, they are saying that the blanket will give you a 400-square metre house with a swimming pool, a tennis court, a view on the ocean and a French chef. Well, they bought it in Don\u2019t Look Up. See how it turned out. <strong>Don\u2019t mix pitching with social reality.
