{"id":4587,"date":"2021-07-01T11:07:28","date_gmt":"2021-07-01T10:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/?p=4587"},"modified":"2021-07-01T11:53:47","modified_gmt":"2021-07-01T10:53:47","slug":"why-lgbt-inclusion-is-a-key-to-long-term-success-in-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/tl-dr\/why-lgbt-inclusion-is-a-key-to-long-term-success-in-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Why LGBT+ inclusion is a key to long-term success in business"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap h-fs-20 h-fw-600 h-mb-20\">According to recent studies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcg.com\/publications\/2020\/inclusive-cultures-must-follow-new-lgbtq-workforce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">40% of LGBTQ employees are not out at work<\/a>, with over half of these respondents wishing they could be.&nbsp;Among LGBT+ employees, many feel that being their authentic selves at work might have negative consequences, a suspicion confirmed by the data: more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cipd.co.uk\/knowledge\/fundamentals\/relations\/diversity\/inclusion-perspectives-lgbt#gref\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">40% of lesbian, gay, and bisexual people experience conflict<\/a> at work, such as being undermined, humiliated or discriminated against.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/diversity-wins-how-inclusion-matters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2020 report on Diversity &amp; Inclusion<\/a>, McKinsey states that \u201cthe most diverse companies are now more likely than ever to outperform less diverse peers on profitability.\u201d Work environments that <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2019\/11\/making-work-less-stressful-and-more-engaging-for-your-employees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ensure psychological safety<\/a>, see increased employee engagement resulting in improvements in retention and productivity. As Tim Jarman said, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>We know that if people can\u2019t feel happy to be themselves, they\u2019re not going to be settled in their workplace, they\u2019re not going to be as productive, <mark>they\u2019re just not going to feel comfortable and included in their organisation and they\u2019ll likely leave. Eventually, you\u2019ll lose that talent<\/mark>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>At Microsoft, where Tim Jarman works to develop and implement diversity &amp; inclusion initiatives, they provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/inclusion-journey\/library\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public resources<\/a> that can help leaders and employees develop their allyship at every level, an essential factor in fostering a supportive workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The role of business in advocating for political change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Andr\u00e9 du Plessis reminds us that businesses do not exist in a vacuum, and while laws and policies in Western Europe have evolved to protect LGBT+ rights, in about 70 countries around the world sexual orientation is still criminalised. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>If you come out in 60% of the world, you could be immediately fired with no redress at all,<\/p><cite>stated Andr\u00e9 du Plessis.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Where political and cultural change stagnates or even regresses, Dr Jean-Luc Vey sees an opportunity for businesses to step in and do something about it: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>We as the companies, we can play a role, and if we work together, we can make change.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As an example, Dr Jean-Luc Vey spoke about the initiative led by Metro, the German wholesaler, to change the German law restricting gay men from donating blood. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-blood-donation-lgbt\/a-53583198\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Their activism has led to support from at least thirteen large companies<\/a> in favour of relaxing restrictions on blood donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark>On a smaller scale, businesses that talk about these topics openly and show their support publicly can have a positive impact on the lives of their employees<\/mark>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Lloyd\u2019s of London launched their Pride Network during Dame Inga Beale\u2019s tenure as CEO, an employee felt comfortable enough to be proud and out about his son being gay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pinkwashing is not always what it seems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year during the month of June, more and more companies adapt their logos to show their support during Pride Month. In certain cases, it can be seen as an empty gesture and the backlash on social media can be swift. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the panellists suggest that the greater public should be careful with their criticism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What might seem to be small steps are the result of years of hard work by Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and negative reactions can be discouraging to LGBT+ groups who have worked tirelessly to bring about change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When speaking about a company\u2019s intentionality to improve diversity and inclusion, Dame Inga Beale <a href=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/choose-to-lead\/it-was-now-the-time-to-feel-free-and-to-be-able-to-bring-my-whole-self-to-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shared her approach<\/a> for identifying organisations that were genuinely implementing their purported values: \u201c<em>I would always look at the actual management team and then I would see how many women were on there and I would see how many different racial groups and ethnic groups were represented<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong>And if I didn\u2019t see diversity right at the top team, I didn\u2019t think they were very serious about it.<\/strong> Because I know as a CEO, you can do something about it and quite quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Role of business schools in driving diversity and inclusion agenda forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In her closing remarks, Prof. Dr. Kirsten Alfes reminded attendees that LGBT+ inclusion is a topic that is complex and nuanced depending on different organisations, cultures and societies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She stressed that business schools, like <a href=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/programmes\/open-programmes\/lgbt-leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESCP<\/a>, had an important role to play in driving the diversity and inclusion agenda forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By including anti-bias and diversity training in the curricula, schools can raise awareness of individual biases and educate tomorrow\u2019s leaders to create, \u201ca climate where everyone can be authentic and inclusive\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Diversity in the workplace is only one part of the equation for successful business performance, the other being actively creating an inclusive environment where employees can express their authentic selves.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":4588,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[15],"tags":[39,42,49,38],"class_list":["post-4587","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tl-dr","tag-inclusion","tag-leadership","tag-management","tag-workplace","category-15","description-off"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.5 -
