When McKinsey & Company and the Boston Consulting Group froze starting salaries for 2026 \u2013 the third year in a row \u2013 it signalled growing pressure on the consulting industry\u2019s traditional \u201cpyramid\u201d model<\/a>, built on a steady intake of young analysts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not just confined to consulting. Across the wider job market, hiring is still about 20% below pre-pandemic levels, and competition for junior roles has grown significantly as a result, according to LinkedIn<\/a>.\u00a0In the UK, each graduate role now attracts around 140 applications<\/strong> \u2013 up from 86 in 2022-23, according to the Institute for Student Employers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artificial intelligence is part of that change. Productivity gains from automation are allowing firms to do more with fewer junior staff, calling into question the logic of hiring large graduate cohorts each year. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Big Four professional services firms \u2013 Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC \u2013 starting pay has not risen since 2022, and senior executives expect graduate recruitment across major service firms to fall by as much as half over the next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For students preparing to enter the workforce, the question is becoming hard to ignore: is AI killing the graduate job, or simply redefining it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are still at the early phase,\u201d says Louis-David Benyayer<\/a>, associate professor at ESCP and AI Initiatives Coordinator. \u201cThe dust hasn\u2019t settled yet. But there are clear early signs of evolution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How AI is reshaping entry-level work <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to Benyayer, the most visible sign of AI\u2019s encroachment is in job descriptions. Even roles far removed from software development now demand \u201cAI-literate\u201d applicants, he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhatever their role \u2013 supply chains, finance, customer service \u2013 companies are expecting students to have AI-related skills,\u201d says Benyayer. \u201cIt shows how quickly AI adoption is rising in companies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The change in job specs is not merely semantic. Many of the tasks once given to early-career employees \u2013 analysing documents, producing summaries, gathering data \u2013 can now be handled by AI systems more quickly and (sometimes) with greater accuracy, <\/strong>according to Benyayer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor some tasks that typical early-career workers did, AI can take over,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shift appears to be reducing demand for certain junior roles \u2013 for example, entry-level data analysts, research assistants or junior consultants \u2013 especially where tasks are routine and highly automatable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is not necessarily mass unemployment, but a reconfiguration of the workforce. \u201cSome companies are contracting people rather than putting them on payroll,\u201d adds Benyayer. His point is that jobs are not always disappearing, but they are increasingly moving out of reach for graduates<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

New roles, but not all built to last<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As some traditional junior tasks disappear, new roles are emerging around generative AI, including positions such as \u201cprompt engineer\u201d. Even so, Benyayer sees such roles as temporary. In his view, they reflect a transitional phase in AI adoption \u2013 one that will fade as the technology becomes fully woven into everyday work. \u201cThey won\u2019t last,\u201d he predicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, he notes that job opportunities are also cropping up within fast-growing, AI-driven companies as their overall demand for staff increases. \u201cTechnology changes how the market functions, creating disruptors and new models,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of this growth is already visible at generative AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, which have grown quickly \u2013 drawing hundreds of millions of users and billions of dollars in investment \u2013 which naturally means their operations and teams have expanded too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In particular, these firms are hiring \u201cforward-deployed engineers\u201d<\/a> \u2013 specialists who bridge technology and clients \u2013 aggressively. Whether these emerging pathways can offset wider graduate-job losses remains unclear. <\/strong>Many employers now field thousands of applications for a single role, with AI systems often screening candidates before a human ever looks at their CV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Emotional intelligence, communication, leadership, problem-solving, critical thinking \u2013 these are qualities that machines cannot and will not substitute.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The skills AI cannot replace<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If automation is thinning out the first rung of the career ladder, even marginally so, Benyayer says the skills that endure are those machines cannot yet replicate<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First is technological fluency: understanding how AI tools work, even if you are not a specialist. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be able to produce the technology yourself,\u201d he says, \u201cbut you must understand its logic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second is domain expertise: being deeply skilled in a specific field or role. \u201cFind something \u2013 an industry, a company, a role \u2013 that you care about,\u201d Benyayer advises students and recent graduates. \u201cTry to be the best at it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And third are human capabilities<\/a>. \u201cEmotional intelligence, communication, leadership, problem-solving, critical thinking \u2013 these are qualities that machines cannot and will not substitute,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business schools and universities, too, face a reckoning. \u201cWe don\u2019t need to be afraid of this change,\u201d Benyayer says. \u201cBut we must adapt.\u201d At ESCP, that adjustment means building AI awareness into every course, making it a core skill for students rather than an optional one. \u201cWe are revising our curriculum so all students become tech fluent,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How graduates can find their footing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For graduates entering this uncertain job market, Benyayer\u2019s advice is practical and hopeful. \u201cFind something you care about and be very good at it,\u201d he says. \u201cMeet people and produce things \u2013 whether writing articles, organising events, or sharing code online that helps others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also urges engagement with the technology itself: \u201cGo to platforms like Hugging Face to explore open-source models. Learn a bit of Python. Understand both the opportunities and the limitations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For new graduates, careers may no longer follow a straight ladder but branch out like a web. But as Benyayer suggests, those who stay curious and keep building skills may yet find that the first rung has not vanished at all. It has simply moved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
