Our real-world experience shows that the strongest leaders rely on three key principles: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.london.edu\/news\/leading-with-purpose-in-turbulent-times-2359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>P<\/strong>urpose<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.hbs.edu\/working-knowledge\/authentic-leadership-rediscovered\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>A<\/strong>uthenticity<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/choose-to-lead\/how-to-encourage-connection-and-trust-in-the-modern-workplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>T<\/strong>rust<\/a> (PAT). These pillars strengthen alignment and resilience, transforming challenges into opportunities in times of rapid change. And they have proven particularly effective in mitigating the impact on teams during the COVID-19 pandemic, where industries were affected to varying degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leading without borders: the art of remote leadership<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hec.edu\/en\/how-lead-remote-teams-effectively\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leading without physical presence<\/a> requires deliberate engagement, emotional intelligence and an inclusive leadership style. These pillars strengthen alignment and resilience, transforming challenges into opportunities in times of rapid change.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Purpose: leading the way to do what is right<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Great leaders don\u2019t just react to change\u2014they drive it. They have a clear understanding of the reason for the very existence of their organisation and make decisions that balance short-term priorities with long-term vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exceptional leaders, particularly those navigating business transformation or leading dispersed teams across the globe, exhibit what Sir Andrew Likierman describes as <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2020\/01\/the-elements-of-good-judgment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">good judgment<\/a>\u2014a critical capability that sustains trust and authenticity. This stagnation creates blind spots and leaves organisations <a href=\"https:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/emba\/how-leadership-can-make-or-break-companies-during-a-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vulnerable to irrelevance<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Authentic leadership is rooted in a strong personal value system\u2014integrity, honesty, and empathy\u2014reflected in tangible, consistent actions. <\/strong>Sustaining this requires self-awareness, accountability, and a deliberate commitment to building trust.<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hks.harvard.edu\/centers\/cpl\/publications\/empathetic-leadership-bridging-division-shared-common-humanity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jacinda Ardern\u2019s<\/a> empathetic and values-driven response during the Christchurch attacks demonstrated how authenticity builds unity and trust during crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crises expose the difference between real leaders and those who merely occupy leadership positions. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted many real-life heroes in frontline medical care who demonstrated extraordinary leadership, going beyond their call of duty in life-and-death situations. They adapted to unprecedented challenges, provided critical support to patients and helped colleagues navigate overwhelming circumstances with resilience and dedication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authentic leaders use their <a href=\"https:\/\/online.hbs.edu\/blog\/post\/authentic-leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inner compasses<\/a> to guide their daily actions, and make decisions based on principles rather than short-term success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>For strategic decision-makers navigating multicultural environments and leading remote or globally dispersed teams, success is no longer just about strategy and analytics. It hinges on the ability to operate with a clear sense of \u2018Purpose\u2019, act with \u2018Authenticity\u2019 and build \u2018Trust\u2019 (PAT).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Trust: the hidden engine of long-term success<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Trust is a business asset and one that compounds over time. It is built through three critical components: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Trust-Imperative-Performance-Improvement-Relationships\/dp\/0873895274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Consistency, Commitment, and Capability<\/a> which are continuously assessed, both consciously and subconsciously, by those we interact with on an ongoing basis. Leaders who genuinely care about their teams\u2019 growth, encourage a culture of learning and collaboration. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hec.edu\/en\/overview\/news\/ratan-tata-s-legacy-visionary-and-responsible-leadership-globalized-world-remembered-hec-paris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ratan Tata\u2019s<\/a> ethical decision-making and visionary leadership cemented a legacy of trust and global impact.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trust requires conscious effort and cannot be replaced by superficial gestures.&nbsp; In major transformations that reshape work practices and impact employees\u2019 professional and personal lives, success depends on the trust a leader earns. Take <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2019\/01\/the-legacy-of-herb-kelleher-cofounder-of-southwest-airlines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Herb Kelleher<\/a> of Southwest Airlines, who fostered a culture of trust that turned his company into an industry icon. Change agents are in a better position to develop long-term confidence when they are not tempted to have recourse to decoys, jargon, and positional authority to induce easy adoption. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trust is built through consistent actions, ethical decisions and transparency &#8211; it serves as a multiplier, enhancing team performance and stakeholder confidence. <\/strong>By encouraging inclusivity and psychological safety, leaders at all levels enhance both decision quality and implementation success. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/collection\/davos-2020\/5764097\/sanna-marin-finland-equality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sanna Marin\u2019s<\/a> commitment to inclusivity amplified societal trust and engagement. Leaders must proactively create spaces for diverse voices to contribute meaningfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trust is also critical in times of disruption. The Covid-19 pandemic revealed which companies had strong supplier relationships built on trust, and which did not. Long-term, trust-based collaboration between buyers and suppliers enabled win-win solutions, secured critical resources, and strengthened resilience in volatile markets. It is clear that <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2022\/11\/3-ways-to-build-trust-with-your-suppliers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trust between companies and their suppliers<\/a> is a cornerstone of supply chain resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The \u2018Grounded Visionary\u2019: a new model for leadership<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For strategic decision-makers navigating multicultural environments and leading remote or globally dispersed teams, success is no longer just about strategy and analytics. It hinges on the ability to operate with a clear sense of \u2018Purpose\u2019, act with \u2018Authenticity\u2019 and build \u2018Trust\u2019 (PAT).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing on two decades of field observations, we developed the \u2018Strategic Decision-making Focus vs. Time Horizon Model\u2019 to look at types of leaders. This model is informed by insights from over 150 strategic decision-makers operating across multiple fields, hierarchical levels and cultural contexts &#8211; many of whom lead without formal authority.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"419\" src=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/grounded-visionary-model.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11587\" style=\"width:1280px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/grounded-visionary-model.png 512w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/grounded-visionary-model-300x246.png 300w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/grounded-visionary-model-150x123.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Strategic Decision-making Focus vs. Time Horizon Model<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Through this model, we identified four leadership tendencies: Tactical Fixer, Deep Specialist, Reactive Multitasker, and Proactive Visionary. Through conscious efforts to cultivate constancy of Purpose, Authenticity and Trust (PAT), particularly when navigating uncertainty, strategic decision-makers can progressively develop a more dynamic and adaptive balance of these traits, a state we define as the \u2018Grounded Visionary\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The \u2018Grounded Visionary\u2019 ensures that an organisation remains agile, purpose-driven and resilient in an era of continuous change by:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aligning short-term execution with medium\/long-term transformation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connecting an organisation\u2019s vision with individuals to create meaningful work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cutting across time horizons to ensure sustained impact beyond immediate goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Purpose, Authenticity and Trust: timeless pillars for driving transformation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Long-term impact is driven by leadership that instils Purpose, Authenticity and Trust, enabling a deep-rooted shift in habits, thinking patterns, and culture. <\/strong>Transformation is not just about adapting to disruption &#8211; it is about shaping a future <a href=\"https:\/\/knight-hennessy.stanford.edu\/news\/leading-integrity-power-trust-and-ethics-leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rooted in integrity<\/a> and meaningful impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider sustainability: while some organisations treat it as a compliance exercise, those that integrate it into their core strategy do so because leaders drive it with <a href=\"https:\/\/sloanreview.mit.edu\/article\/make-leader-character-your-competitive-edge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">character<\/a> and conviction.
