Today, these \u201chuman\u201d skills \u2014 communication, adaptability, self-awareness, empathy \u2014 are no longer \u201csoft\u201d add-ons to technical expertise. They\u2019re critical for navigating the dynamic, people-driven work environments we operate in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But how do we define soft skills, and how can we upskill them to meet the demands of the modern workplace?<\/strong> To dive deeper, we spoke <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">with<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/succi-chiara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chiara Succi<\/a>, associate professor of organisational behaviour at ESCP, whose research and insights shed light on these often underexplored areas of professional development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Soft skills have become indispensable given the complexity of today\u2019s workplace and the need to engage with diverse people professionally.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-rounded\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"491\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/succi_small-2.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Chiara Succi, an associate professor of organizational behaviour and the Academic Director of the Bachelor in Management at ESCP Business School's Turin campus\" class=\"wp-image-3703\" srcset=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/succi_small-2.jpg 491w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/succi_small-2-295x300.jpg 295w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/succi_small-2-150x153.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The evolution of soft skills<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSoft skills have become indispensable given the complexity of today\u2019s workplace and the need to engage with diverse people professionally,\u201d Succi begins. \u201cUnlike the past, where we might encounter new people infrequently, today\u2019s roles are marked by regular exposure to diverse perspectives and contexts, which demands both emotional and cultural intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Succi explains that as technology and global connections accelerate, the need for emotional intelligence has grown proportionally. And, <strong>in a world of increasing automation, these uniquely human skills \u2014 like empathy, adaptability and even humour \u2014 are the differentiators<\/strong> that allow professionals to stand out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Measuring the impact of soft skills<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the challenges around soft skills is measurement. \u201cTypically, we want to quantify everything in business to validate decisions,\u201d Succi notes. \u201cBut soft skills are more intangible, demanding a qualitative approach to truly gauge their impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Succi points to <em>Humor, Seriously: Why Humor Is a Secret Weapon in Business and Life<\/em>, a book by Jennifer Aaker and Naomi Bagdonas as a great example of how qualitative tools can measure soft skills in action.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authors\u2019 findings highlight humour\u2019s powerful role in leadership and creativity, confirming what many leaders intuitively know: a well-timed joke or an empathetic connection often outshines technical expertise in generating trust, collaboration and even innovative thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This shift in perspective also extends to how businesses evaluate success. <strong>Traditional metrics like productivity or profitability are now supplemented by the \u201csofter\u201d measures of team cohesion, creativity and employee satisfaction<\/strong> \u2014 indicators that often correlate strongly with a high-performing organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Upskilling soft skills<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Are soft skills inherent or can they be learned? According to Succi, it\u2019s a balanced blend: \u201cFifty-fifty,\u201d she shares. \u201cSome human skills are innate and shaped by early experiences, yet they\u2019re also absolutely modifiable. The most important skill to nurture \u2014 and one that\u2019s readily teachable \u2014 is self-awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Developing self-awareness is a gradual process of tuning in to one\u2019s preferences, strengths and areas for growth<\/strong>, she explains. Simple actions, like reflecting on feedback, keeping a journal (observing ourselves in action), or setting specific goals for personal growth, can contribute significantly to building self-awareness.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, communication and emotional intelligence often follow; self-aware individuals are more attuned to others\u2019 perspectives, making it easier to engage meaningfully in a collaborative environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>[Soft skills] are the cornerstone of career growth in a world increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence. Robots may bring speed and precision, but we, as humans, bring imagination, intuition and affection.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thriving in remote work\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the rise of remote work, new soft skills have taken centre stage. Succi notes that <strong>remote work has amplified the need for digital communication skills, as well as digital etiquette and self-motivation<\/strong>. So in a setting where face-to-face cues are limited, communication has become more nuanced, requiring a heightened level of clarity, respect for digital boundaries and self-management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, adaptability \u2014 already a core soft skill \u2014 has become even more critical, Succi adds. Professionals must not only adapt to evolving roles and responsibilities but to an entirely new mode of working, where flexibility and digital fluency are non-negotiable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Employers\u2019 expectations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But one of the most significant changes Succi highlights is the shift in responsibility for soft skills development. \u201cEmployers no longer feel responsible for developing these skills,\u201d she says. \u201cThey expect employees to take ownership of their personal and professional growth, even while working intense hours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This trend has placed the onus on individuals to pursue self-driven learning and upskilling, whether through workshops, online courses or networking. For today\u2019s professionals, <strong>this means taking proactive steps to invest in their growth and embracing the reality that self-development is essential to career advancement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Busting the myths<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, a major barrier to that are the myths around soft skills. Perhaps the biggest misconception, Succi argues, is the very label \u201csoft\u201d. \u201cCalling them \u2018soft\u2019 undermines their value,\u201d she explains. \u201cThese skills are the cornerstone of career growth in a world increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence. Robots may bring speed and precision, but we, as humans, bring imagination, intuition and affection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this light, <strong>soft skills are less about \u201csoftness\u201d and more about differentiating ourselves in ways that machines can\u2019t replicate<\/strong>. As artificial intelligence handles more technical tasks, the distinctly human aspects of work \u2014 creativity, empathy, adaptability \u2014 may well determine who thrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So investing in soft skills is no longer optional \u2014 it\u2019s essential. By focusing on self-awareness, refining communication and continuously adapting to change, individuals can not only secure their place in the workforce, but stand out as leaders in a world eager for a human touch.
