While being \u201calways on\u201d might seem like the new norm, neglecting to draw a clear line between work and personal life can seriously affect our mental health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kerstin Alfes, a professor of organisation and human resource management at ESCP Business School\u2019s Berlin campus, says that boundaries are essential \u2014 not just for better time management, but for safeguarding our mental and physical well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Boundaries are essential for a number of reasons. This can lead to higher stress levels, health issues and in extreme cases, burnout, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/prescriptions-for-life\/201902\/why-lack-of-boundaries-can-lead-to-burnout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research shows<\/a>.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alfes also mentions that without these limits, people may turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms, like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthworkscollective.com\/the-link-between-job-related-stress-and-substance-abuse\/#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> substance abuse<\/a>, as a way to deal with the pressure and workload.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Spotting the need for stronger limits<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you know if you need to set stronger limits? Alfes recommends watching for a few key signs: \u201cIf you notice people regularly working outside of normal hours, starting early or staying late, it\u2019s a clear signal that boundaries may need to be strengthened,\u201d she explains. This behaviour might suggest they\u2019re having trouble completing their work within regular hours and could be feeling overwhelmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alfes highlights emotional shifts as another warning sign: <strong>increased irritability, short tempers and frequent conflicts with coworkers can all indicate that someone is pushing beyond their limits<\/strong>. \u201cWithout clear boundaries, people tend to become more emotionally reactive,\u201d she explains. Even minor issues, like a missed email or a delayed project, can start to feel overwhelming, which Alfes says can show in how they engage with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Busting myths about boundaries<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A common reason people are reluctant to set boundaries is the fear of how others will perceive them. Alfes points out that this is a widespread misconception. \u201cMany worry that if they establish boundaries, they\u2019ll be viewed as less dedicated or motivated,\u201d she explains. This concern is particularly strong in workplaces where the norm is always to be available or work late, such as many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/f4006248-eb05-49d2-a938-d70118c4ce1b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corporate law firms<\/a><strong> <\/strong>or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2021\/mar\/24\/goldman-sachs-junior-bankers-rebel-over-18-hour-shifts-and-low-pay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investment banks<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a time when the line between work and personal life is more blurred than ever \u2013 especially after the Covid-19 pandemic \u2013 setting strict cutoffs can seem outdated. However, Alfes believes this is still crucial. \u201cThe idea of separating work from life might feel old-fashioned, but it\u2019s a must,\u201d she says.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without clear limits, work can easily spill into personal time, leaving little opportunity to fully unwind and recharge, for example by practising mindfulness, getting regular exercise or enough sleep.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Once you\u2019ve established [boundaries], don\u2019t make exceptions. If you keep bending the rules, others will start to lose respect for those boundaries.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to start setting boundaries<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how do you start setting boundaries at work? <strong>Alfes suggests the first step is having an open conversation with your boss<\/strong>. \u201cSpeak with your line manager and explain that your boundaries aren\u2019t being respected, or that you\u2019re feeling overwhelmed,\u201d she advises. This kind of dialogue, while potentially nerve-wracking, can help pave the way for a more balanced and supportive approach to managing your workload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s equally important to stick to the boundaries you do set. \u201cOnce you\u2019ve established them, don\u2019t make exceptions,\u201d Alfes stresses. Whether it\u2019s blocking off specific days for focused work or not answering work calls after hours, staying consistent is key. \u201c<strong>If you keep bending the rules, others will start to lose respect for those boundaries<\/strong>,\u201d she warns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning to say \u201cno\u201d is another essential skill. Alfes acknowledges that this can be particularly difficult for women, who often feel pressured to demonstrate a willingness to perform and therefore take on more than they can manage. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/11\/women-workplace-2021-invisible-labour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research<\/a> shows that women are often expected to take on more responsibilities, both at work and at home. This can involve \u201cinvisible\u201d tasks like boosting team morale or organising events, along with extra duties to demonstrate their dedication and commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to be clear about why you can\u2019t take on additional tasks and stand your ground,\u201d Alfes says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organisations play a key role in helping employees establish and maintain boundaries. Some companies, for example, have implemented measures like shutting down email servers after business hours, or requiring employees to take extended vacations. German carmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/lidl-volkswagen-phone-emails-right-to-disconnect-facebook-work-a9162266.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Volkswagen<\/a>, for instance, has tried restricting work emails between 6pm and 7am, while rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/08\/17\/one-companys-genius-way-to-free-employees-from-email-on-vacation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daimler<\/a> took that further by automatically deleting emails sent to employees during their vacations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alfes says such policies highlight the importance of personal time, creating a culture where employees feel empowered to disconnect and recharge without guilt or pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How boundaries safeguard wellbeing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Failing to set boundaries doesn\u2019t just steal your time \u2013 it takes a toll on your mental health. Alfes underlines that boundaries are one key to recovery. \u201c<strong>Without time to recharge, both productivity and well-being suffer<\/strong>,\u201d she explains. One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/ninaangelovska\/2018\/11\/08\/what-happens-when-you-force-your-employees-to-go-on-vacation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> found that mandatory vacations boosted creativity by 33% and overall productivity by 13%\u200b.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRecovery is directly tied to high performance,\u201d Alfes stresses.
