These little moments sparked creativity, built connections and boosted morale.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But with more people working remotely or in hybrid setups, those interactions have evolved. According to Emmanuelle L\u00e9on and Ya\u00eblle Amsallem, both academics at ESCP Business School and part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/faculty-research\/chairs-professorships\/reinventing-work-chair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Reinventing Work<\/em> Chair<\/a>, companies must be more intentional about fostering these connections if they want to keep their culture and productivity strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>You can\u2019t have a company culture without interactions. It\u2019s not something you can write down on paper. Now, with remote work, those unplanned moments are rare. \u201cWe\u2019ve moved to a place<strong> where even unintentional meetings need to be scheduled<\/strong>,\u201d says Emmanuelle L\u00e9on, an associate professor of human resource management at ESCP\u2019s Paris campus and scientific director of the Reinventing Work Chair.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may sound strange, but to create spontaneous interactions in this new reality, the researchers say you actually have to plan for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ya\u00eblle Amsallem adds that <strong>it\u2019s often these unplanned, casual moments that lead to major decisions or innovative ideas that can drive real business benefits.<\/strong> \u201cWhat we are missing now are those spontaneous relationships where important ideas are exchanged,\u201d explains the postdoctoral researcher at ESCP. These interactions play a crucial role in fostering both culture and creativity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spontaneous conversations \u2014 whether in the cafe or during a quick chat \u2014 often spark new ideas and lead to problem-solving that formal meetings might miss. Both researchers say these casual moments help build rapport, trust and team cohesion, all of which are crucial for creativity and innovation, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-031-28206-5_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research shows<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plan for creativity and connection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In remote work, the challenge is to create those moments intentionally, even when they don\u2019t happen naturally. They aren\u2019t just about being social \u2014 they\u2019re crucial for company culture. \u201c<strong>You can\u2019t have a company culture without interactions,\u201d<\/strong> says Emmanuelle L\u00e9on. \u201cIt\u2019s not something you can write down on paper. It\u2019s how people behave with each other.\u201d Without regular interactions, employees may struggle to understand the culture or feel fully engaged with the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ya\u00eblle Amsallem, who completed her PhD at ESCP, agrees, pointing out that while individual performance might improve with remote work, the overall performance of the organisation can suffer. \u201cA key factor in ensuring collective performance is fostering a strong organisational culture,\u201d she says. Emmanuelle L\u00e9on stresses that <strong>there\u2019s no \u201cone-size-fits-all\u201d solution<\/strong>, but there are strategies companies can try. For example, she says some businesses are redesigning their offices to encourage more casual encounters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At WeWork\u2019s London offices, the co-working company has replaced some individual desks with more open \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.in\/thelife\/news\/big-companies-are-redesigning-their-offices-in-response-to-covid-19-and-it-might-mean-smaller-cafeterias-and-the-end-of-traditional-coffee-machines\/articleshow\/83084741.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collaboration hubs<\/a>\u201d. The goal? To get people mingling more, and strengthen company culture through informal chats and teamwork.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other companies are scheduling dedicated in-person days, where employees come together to interact more freely. A good example is Core Digital Media in Los Angeles. Employees there are required to come into the office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.builtinla.com\/articles\/hybrid-work-3-la-companies-blended-approach-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">twice a week<\/a>, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while the rest of the week is flexible for remote work. This hybrid setup aims to strike a balance between focused remote work and in-person collaboration, helping to strengthen team relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCompanies are starting to realise that they\u2019re missing the oil that keeps the engine running,\u201d says Emmanuelle L\u00e9on. \u201c<strong>Those little interactions are what make everything work.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rethinking office spaces<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One way companies are tackling this is through smarter office design. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of work in environmental psychology about how to create spaces that encourage interaction,\u201d says Emmanuelle L\u00e9on. Whether it\u2019s making sure people pass each other on their way to the coffee machine or positioning the elevators in ways that encourage conversation, she says companies are getting creative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,<strong> just putting people together isn\u2019t enough.<\/strong> \u201cDid you make a bunch of new friends on the subway this morning just because you were close to them?\u201d Emmanuelle L\u00e9on asks. The proximity may help, but it doesn\u2019t guarantee connection.<strong> Companies need to think more about team-building activities and how they can create meaningful bonds between employees.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Team size and duration of projects also matter. Emmanuelle L\u00e9on points out that smaller, longer-term teams tend to build stronger relationships. \u201cIt\u2019s harder to create connections in a big team working together for a short time,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As remote and hybrid work become the new norm, companies need to rethink how they foster connections. The need for human connection remains essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIntentionality is the key,\u201d says Emmanuelle L\u00e9on. Whether it\u2019s through thoughtful office design, team-building, or simply making time for informal chats, companies can adapt to ensure employees stay engaged and connected. <strong>In a world where we\u2019re no longer bumping into each other at the water cooler, creating space for meaningful interactions is more important than ever.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The big takeaway?
