{"id":10863,"date":"2024-02-06T17:13:59","date_gmt":"2024-02-06T15:13:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/?p=10863"},"modified":"2024-02-06T17:14:02","modified_gmt":"2024-02-06T15:14:02","slug":"corporate-sustainability-reporting-deserves-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/tl-dr\/corporate-sustainability-reporting-deserves-better\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cCorporate Sustainability Reporting deserves better\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap has-medium-font-size\">Recently, I wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7155963662971670531\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a LinkedIn post<\/a> about examples of surreal sustainability reporting. Well, the story has evolved, particularly around CGN Power Co Ltd. After I highlighted <a href=\"http:\/\/en.cgnp.com.cn\/encgnp\/c100882\/2023-03\/15\/e9c61d0784cb40c6be10a2e75a2d60c4\/files\/af89defd5f4d44089fcb11e3cc899e24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">their reported 16.4 billion tons of CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions<\/a> \u2013 that&#8217;s 40% more than China&#8217;s total annual emissions -, journalist Sophie Robinson-Tillett did what good journalists do: she asked questions. In my role as an academic, I had double-checked these figures against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lseg.com\/en\/data-analytics\/sustainable-finance\/esg-scores?esg=CGN+Power+Co+Ltd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Refinitiv database<\/a>, a trusted source in financial markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/real-economy-progress.com\/data-disclosure\/the-rise-of-assurance-standards-for-esg-reports\/\">Sophie&#8217;s inquiry<\/a> led her to Ernst &amp; Young Hua Ming LLP, which had provided limited assurance on CGN Power\u2019s report. In their assurance statement, they promise to have looked at \u201cpurchased electricity equivalent to carbon dioxide emissions.\u201d Therefore, they are the right people to talk to. The auditor\u2019s response pointed to lower figures reported elsewhere in the report of about 164 million tons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"399\" src=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/1706702028726.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10868\" srcset=\"https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/1706702028726.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/1706702028726-300x150.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/1706702028726-768x383.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/escp.eu\/thechoice\/wp-content\/uploads\/1706702028726-150x75.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>So, was this just a case of some misplaced digits? Interestingly, Refinitiv had also reported 16 billion tons of CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions for 2022. Therefore, <mark>it\u2019s more than an academic finding an error in reporting, it\u2019s about a prime information source for decision-making in the financial markets repeating and spreading it.<\/mark> This information was deleted during the last few days. It seemed like a victory for accuracy, but the story does not end there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digging deeper, it turned out that the data on Refinitiv for 2022, and previous years, is not about CGN\u2019s actual CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions at all. Instead, it refers to the amount of CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions the company claims to have helped reduce. Finding information on the company\u2019s actual CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions in the report is surprisingly difficult and maybe even impossible. <strong>The data, whether in millions or billions, is as misplaced as putting my bank account number in that field.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The checks and balances that we urgently need to make sure that data is reliable or quite simply usable do not seem to work.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The limited assurance reports\u2019 claim now appears even more puzzling. The plot thickens further when looking at the NO<sub>x<\/sub> and SO<sub>x<\/sub> emissions data. In the Refinitiv field where other firms&#8217; emissions are usually reported, we find information on emissions reduced due to nuclear power. <strong>It is a bit like being asked to count calories to lose weight but then report on the calories one could have eaten but did not eat.<\/strong> It\u2019s kind of interesting but misses the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sustainability reporting, just like financial reporting, has a range of checks and balances that should help to avoid misstatements.<\/strong> There are reporting standards like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalreporting.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)<\/a>. Some jurisdictions, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hkex.com.hk\/?sc_lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stock Exchange of Hong Kong<\/a> where CGN is listed is a good example, also have reporting requirements. <a href=\"https:\/\/en-rules.hkex.com.hk\/sites\/default\/files\/net_file_store\/HKEX4476_3841_VER18584.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Appendix 27 of the main Board Listing Rules<\/a> stipulates for example the disclosure of direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions. Companies have internal controls, of course, and stakeholder engagement and market forces should help to check and improve what is reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Errors can nevertheless occur.
