From a foundation in consulting to leading innovation within one of Germany\u2019s foremost digital and tech media groups, Johanna Heise\u2019s career has been characterised by curiosity, determination, and a global mindset. After completing the Master in Management<\/a> at ESCP across the London<\/a>, Berlin<\/a>, and Madrid <\/a>campuses, with a focus on family business management, international management, and sales & marketing, Johanna returned to her family\u2019s company to lead its transformation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, as CEO of heise ventures<\/a>, Head of Brand & Culture at heise, and a member of the executive circle of the heise academy, she is shaping the future of a multigenerational business while advancing a modern, people-centred leadership approach. Recognised as one of Capital magazine\u2019s \u201c40 under 40\u201d, Johanna speaks with us about her career so far, the lessons she carries from ESCP, and the mindset needed for tomorrow\u2019s leaders.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations on being named one of Capital magazine\u2019s \u201c40 under 40\u201d. What does this recognition mean to you, and how does it reflect the direction the heise group is taking today?<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recognition means a great deal to me, and I was genuinely surprised and honored. It shows that my efforts to increase visibility for our company are being recognized. In today\u2019s world, especially with the rise of AI, visibility and a strong brand are more important than ever. They create trust and credibility, which help set us apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your career has evolved quickly \u2013 from consulting at KPMG and Simon-Kucher to becoming CEO of heise ventures and Head of Brand & Culture at heise. Looking back, which experiences shaped your leadership style the most?<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m still learning what it truly means to lead, motivate and empower people to do their best. Each stage of my career has shaped me: consulting taught me how to structure complex problems and organizations, while my studies at WHU and ESCP showed me how to bring together diverse teams to achieve outstanding results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a young executive in a family-owned business, you navigate both tradition and innovation. How do you balance respecting heritage while pushing new ventures and cultural transformation?<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, tradition doesn\u2019t mean being stuck in the past. It\u2019s about being deeply rooted in our values and using our experience to shape the future. Understanding our history helps us innovate with purpose. Every new venture and transformation at heise is guided by our core goal: providing people with the right answers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You studied at three ESCP campuses \u2013 London, Berlin and Madrid \u2013 focusing on family business. management, international management, and sales & marketing. How did this multi-campus experience influence the way you lead and think about brand, culture, and innovation?<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Studying at three different ESCP campuses gave me a deep appreciation for diverse perspectives and cultures. It taught me the value of integrating different opinions\u2014something that\u2019s crucial for building strong brands, fostering innovation, and developing a vibrant company culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many ESCP students are interested in careers that combine consulting, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Which skills or mindsets from your MiM and consulting years prove most valuable in your role today?<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most valuable skills from my MiM and consulting years are the ability to structure challenges, lead teams, and collaborate effectively in group settings. These skills are essential for navigating complex projects and driving meaningful progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond your professional responsibilities, you dedicate time to running, spinning and yoga. How do these routines contribute to your resilience and productivity as a leader?<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Regular exercise, whether running, spinning or yoga, is essential for my mental and physical well-being. It keeps me balanced, helps me process my thoughts, and prepares me for the day ahead. I firmly believe that everyone benefits from making exercise a regular part of their routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you could share one piece of advice with current ESCP students, and particularly those aspiring to leadership roles, what would it be and why?<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t be afraid to step up and pursue the role you want. Say yes to new opportunities, even if they seem daunting at first. Every experience is a chance to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
