Carla Devico‘s journey as a Bachelor in Management (BSc) student is a captivating narrative woven with cultural threads. Her Moroccan origins, blended with Spanish roots and a passion for global travels, forged a multifaceted identity that found its fullest expression in the multicultural milieu of ESCP Business School. « Also, my Jewish religion defines a lot of who I am and how I approach life principles, » Carla shares, offering a glimpse into the intricate mosaic of her background. Almost naturally, our BSc became the best canvas where her distinct cultural influences could have painted a vibrant picture of her future.

Choices and Changes: Carla’s Academic Exploration

Embarking on an academic journey and, consequently, determining a career path is a formidable challenge, especially when lacking a specific passion. Carla Devico, two years before high school graduation, faced this uncertainty while majoring in Sciences. Reflecting on her journey, Carla shares, « I was pretty good at it but felt deep down that this was not where I see myself working in the real world. » Seeking guidance, an education adviser introduced her to the ESCP Bachelor, which is renowned for its focus on real-world skills and international uniqueness. For Carla, it meant combining learning and travelling simultaneously ”“ an irresistible proposition.

Fast forward to her Bachelor experience, Carla expresses contentment, saying, « My bachelor experience was great – I am happy about the decision I made, and I don’t regret anything. » Acknowledging the program’s demanding nature, she highlights its positive didactic shift. « The professors are open to listening and debating about students’ opinions, helping me perform better academically. » Adapting to English classes, group projects, and diverse team dynamics, Carla discovered her leadership skills, thanking the BSc for profound lessons in self-discovery and teamwork.

Developing Skills: Practice Makes Perfect

In the sphere of teamwork within the BSc, Carla unfolds a compelling anecdote that vividly exemplifies the nurturing and development of essential skills. Faced with the pandemic’s unforeseen challenges, her team had to swiftly pivot their plan for a fashion show into an ‘online’ event when the school closed, transforming it literally overnight. « The main skill learned was to make decisions in unpredictable situations, » Carla reflects. Despite challenges, the team’s adaptability not only showcased resilience but also earned them a rewarding grade. This experience underscored the importance of rapid decision-making and adaptability, two essential skills in the ever-evolving business landscape.

As Carla approached her degree, uncertainties about her future loomed. Embracing her uncertainty, she opted for real-world experiences to gain clarity, embarking on two six-month internships during a year off. Carla emphasizes, « Studies are good for theories, but there is no better place than a workplace to understand business and life. » Interning in Supply Chain at Faurecia in Valencia and Marketing at Clarins in New York, Carla discovered her passion for Marketing, emphasizing the transformative power of practical experiences in shaping one’s professional identity.

The internship at Clarins stood out as a turning point for Carla, offering a deep dive into corporate intricacies. Whether it was the dynamic team, the vibrant New York City offices, or the challenging missions, Carla found herself immersed in corporate life. She highlights lessons in team cohesion, effective communication, and the paramount importance of meeting deadlines, especially in marketing. This experience not only refined her professional skills but also provided a unique perspective on large international companies. ”The BSc was very enriching and opened a lot of doors to me as a student” adds Carla. Her journey is a true testament to the programme’s commitment to practical skill development, preparing students for the multifaceted challenges of the global business arena.

Paving the Way: From ESCP Campuses to NYU

Carla’s journey across ESCP’s diverse campuses”London, Madrid, and Berlin”has broadened her horizons and endowed her with enhanced open-mindedness, a quality she believes significantly contributes to her smoother approach to life.

Moreover, the whole experience paved the way for her subsequent academic pursuits. Having gained admission to the prestigious NYU, Carla readily acknowledges the pivotal role ESCP played in this transition. The rotation of countries and studying in English indeed facilitated her seamless compliance with NYU’s requirements. « From the university’s standpoint, this distinctive approach to internationality is exceptionally rare and impressively caught the attention of the admissions board, significantly elevating the visibility of my application, » she notes.

As Carla envisions her future, she outlines a clear path: « After my master’s degree at NYU, I would like to work in small companies to acquire more practical experience and knowledge. » This strategic choice aligns with her overarching ambition ” to establish her own company, leveraging the insights acquired along her unique trajectory. My idea of the ”˜how’ is not determined yet, but I know that I want to offer solutions for the world of tomorrow by sharing and embracing innovation and creation.”  

Joining ESCP: A Lifelong Impact

Carla Devico’s passage through ESCP not only defined her academic trajectory but left an indelible imprint on her personal and professional ethos. The cultural amalgamation, dynamic academic exploration, and emphasis on teamwork became the pillars shaping her multifaceted identity.
